DH and I decided on a whim to go to NYC for the day on Saturday. We are going to drive to Jersey and take the ferry over. We want to hit Rockerfeller Center, Times Square, Canal St, Little Italy and Ground Zero. We need some restaurant recs! I'm thinking pizza for lunch and a sit down restaurant for dinner. Nothing too fancy as we'll be dressed pretty casually. I'd also like to get a NY bagel in the morning, so any good bagel spots are appreciated too! TIA!

Re: NYC area gals
I'm not from the area but had a great tour guide (my friend D) when she and I went in '07 for Labor Day weekend! If you like Gordon Ramsay, he has a restaurant at the London Hotel called Maze. It's much more reasonable than his other restaurant (also inside the hotel, which requires a 2 month reservation). It's mostly seafood if you like that - but we really enjoyed the experience!! Also for pizza, we had really good pizza at a place called Adrienne's on Stone Street. It's indoor/outdoor seating too, depending on the weather.
Go to the top of the Empire State building too, if you get a chance. It looks cool being able to see everything from up there. It was also cool to see my grandparents' names on the wall at Ellis Island (they came over from Italy).
Heh, if you are taking the ferry over you are probably going to be within a mile of where I live! Are you taking the ferry to midtown or Battery Park?
If you are going to Little Italy, you can have lunch or dinner there. There are good pizza places there and obviously great Italian food. There are probably better places for Italian food in NYC, but I love the atmosphere of Little Italy (of course many NYers think it's a tourist trap). You might want to hop over to Chinatown too since it's right there.
I don't have many recs for a sit-down dinner place since usually when we have dinner in NYC, it's for a special occasion so it's an upscale place, or we're eating in MIL's neighborhood which isn't close to where you'll be. If you have an idea of what area you will be in at dinnertime I can get some recs from DH since he grew up there. One place I love is Blue Water Grill, a seafood place in Union Square (which is one of my favorite areas). I'm also partial to the awesome Jewish delis. FYI - all but the most upscale places in NYC are casual, people wear jeans everywhere now.
There are tons of good bagel places in NYC. I know DH loves one on 2nd Ave. close to where he grew up, but that will be out of the way for you. Just look for the places with long lines... those will be the best!
Check out Vynl. There is one on 51st (ish) and 9th ave (it might be at 50th) their food is great but there is also one down in the Chelsea area if you are further downtown. Its casual but really fun and tasty. We went there for my bachelorette party and DH and I had been there a lot before that.
There is also a place in the Village and in Hells Kitchen called Amy's Bread not a bagel but awesome pastries and things like that that are just SO good.
Lindsay...DH and I went to NYC a few years ago and ate at Lombardi's in Little Italy I believe. http://www.firstpizza.com/ Their claim to fame is being the first Pizza in America (or at least NYC). The pizza was fantastic! You will want to eat like 5 pies in one sitting. It's cooked in a brick oven, and has very fresh toppings and crispy crust! yum!
DH and I also ate at Stage Deli for lunch one time we went (you could do dinner too). It was so good, huge portions, but it was quintessential NYC deli.
Have fun!
If you are an Anthony Bourdain fan then go to Les Halles. He's obviousl not there anymore, but when we went we saw Carlos whcih was equally exciting! Plus the food is great!!
Also, because I also love Eric Ripert, and if you want to be ULTRA swanky, you can check out his restaurant Le Bernardin. I want to go there so bad it's not even funny.

We are getting the ferry from the terminal in Port Imperial (I think that's what it's called) and plan on going in to Midtown....our plan is to do Times Square & Rockerfeller in the morning and Canal St, Little Italy & Ground Zero in the afternoon. At least that's what we are hoping for!
Thanks everyone for all the great recs....I am so looking foward to going, I haven't been to NYC for several years. I have lots of googling to do
