Runners/joggers: What do I need?

I'm almost done with the c25k program and MH and I are signed up to walk and/or very slowly jog the Cap 10K.

My shoes are good, but I'm running in MH's large t-shirts and some full length yoga like pants (kinda loose and with a wider calf) that I got for cheap at Target. I'm thinking they're probably not the best for running and I should probably switch up my gear if I'm going to be running more often.

So what should I wear to run and where should I get it?

Re: Runners/joggers: What do I need?

  • Some runners like to wear the really loose, short shorts, but they never worked for me. They'd always ride up between my thighs and ever ten steps I was waddling to pull them out of my crotch. I actually ran a lot in tight capris or tri shorts (like cycling shorts)--the tighter material stayed in place and the wicking fabric kept me cool.

As for tops, I preferred wicking tanks. T-shirts always got too sweaty and wet for my liking. You can find some great, cheap shirts at places like Academy, but it's also worth checking out more expensive places like RunTex or Jack and Adam's for their clothing--it costs more but will keep you super comfy.

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • first, do you have an awesome running bra? if not, i would recommend getting fitted for one. bettysport has a great variety. it will change your life.

shirts- wicking makes all the difference. target will have some or you can hit up a running store. of course, those will be more expensive. MH runs in cotton shirts and i think he's crazy pants. but, at the end of the day, it's whatever keeps you comfortable.

pants- you know, i have no problem using cotton pants, but it definitely looks like i've wet myself when i'm done. i have a couple of pairs of wicking Brooks capri length that fit well.

  • Thank you!

Rssn - Shorts don't work for me either. My legs get red and itchy when uncovered and that gets distracting. Tight capris will probably be the way to go there. And I totally forgot about Academy. I'll check it out.

MC - My bra is okay, but a trip to bettysport is probably in order.

Another question: Anyone have an iPhone armband or carry pouch thing that they just love?

  • Good for you running the Cap10k! That is such a FUN race!! :)

I hate shorts as well! I use Nike Running Tights - I got a pair at D i c k ' s that work well for me! They are this pair: http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpageWRA-NWTCCP1.html.

As far as tops go, I prefer long sleeves or tank tops for running - I always start chafing at the seam of short sleeve shirts, so I steer clear of those, especially if I'm running longer distances. My favorites are the Under Armour racerback tanks. I think they're like $19.99 at Academy.

It's super important to make sure your shoes fit well. You should be replacing them every 300-500 miles. I am in love with Inov-8 shoes - they're a minimalist style running shoe and not for everyone...but now that I've started running in them, I won't go back!

I don't have an iPhone, but I used a water belt from REI for part of my marathon and all of my training. It held two bottles of water and had room for energy gels/chews in a pouch on the back. It was so nice to have!

Hope that helps! Good luck with the race! :)

ETA: Ditto to MC and rssn on the wicking fabrics. I bought a non-wicking pair of capris once and definitely looked like I'd peed my pants by the end of my run ;)

  • The only things I get at the running store are shoes and sometimes socks.

I need industrial strength bras so I get mine at Petticoat Fair. Highly recommend, especially if you're heavy up top.

Tops - I like the tight, polyester/spandex tank tops with the built-in shelf bras because, again, every little bit of support helps.  That material is also good for wicking moisture away from your body.  I usually wear a cotton t-shirt over that now because nobody needs to see me pudgy gut bouncing along the road.  I often find the tank tops in the sales racks at Sports Authority.  I haven't had as much sales luck at Academy.

Bottoms - I hate, hate, hate shorts and haven't worn them for running in years.  If it's cool enough I wear polyester/spandex capris or pants.  Again, I find them on sale all the time at Sports Authority.  If it's hot, I wear these adorable skirts.  They can be kinda pricey, but I've bought several during their sales (get on the email list).  I'm a total skirt convert.  They're comfy and they've eliminated that awkward mid-run thigh-riding pull-down.  Love them!

  • I have only been a running spectator/fan, but I can chime in with one recommendation:  body glide.

I don't know if it would be a necessity for a 10K, but I know a couple of gals who use it no matter how far they're going.  Where to put it?  Wherever your clothes might rub against your skin.  One of my girlfriends uses it all along the edges of her sports bra, and on her inner thighs.  (She wears shorts.)  It seems like it's especially helpful the hotter/more humid the weather gets.

  • Oh, I just remembered the brand of bra that I like (my brain isn't working this morning- too full of goo).

Moving Comfort.  They have several different styles, but my absolute favorite feature (not available on all styles) is that the straps adjust from the FRONT! GENIUS!!! When I'm exercising, I find that my bra starts off feeling tight, but then after about 30 minutes or so, it feels like it has loosened up. You can simply reach in the neck band of your shirt and tighten the strap (while running). Oh, and I used to wear two sports bras, which really constricted breathing. NO MORE!

I sound like an infomercial- but they really are great.

  • Ditto the Moving Comfort rec. Best sports bra I have ever had. My favorite shirt is a champion tank I got at Target. It is extremely lightweight and really wicks away moisture. They had it in white, pink and I believe black. I am watching for them to go on sale so I can buy a few more. Oops, forgot I wanted to rec my spibelt! You can't actually adjust the iPod without pulling it out, but it is totally antishock. I don't even know it is on when I am running. I'm doing the Cap10K too. I will have to keep an eye out for you!

  • I am fairly particular about what I wear running bc I have sensitive skin and chafe. When it's hot out I wear the two-tone Nike running shorts - ttheyre not too short & they have a hidden interior hip pocket. Love 'em. When it's cooler I wear running tights or capris. I just (about a week or so ago) bought some capris at old navy on sale & love them. They also have a pocket at your lower back/upper butt for a key or gu or what have you. I like a pocket. ;) I am super-picky about shirts. My favorite is a sleeveless Nike running shirt that wicks, is comfy, but not real loose or so tight it rides up (I hate that) and it hits at the hip. and body Glide is a must for me, even on short runs. Good luck on the race! I'm running it too - I think it's going to be a lot of fun! Eta: I got the Nike shorts & shirt at Academy.
  • Thanks everyone. I have some shopping to do!

  • I go for compression and wicking. CW-X is my favourite brand of... everything! Capri tights, tank tops, running bras. They're constructed with fabric "taping" to support your muscles and worth every penny. You can get it at Bettysport.

I don't "do" cotton if I might sweat. It interferes with the body's cooling system and is more likely to chafe. Wicking, wicking, wicking!

Compression clothing (ie, not just tight or fitted- it has to be a strong fabric so skip anything at Target unless you're doing yoga) not only supports your muscles and keeps them warm, it decreases jiggle. Wink

I also like padded wicking socks, good shoes, CamelBak water bottles with the straw, a wicking hat, and my outdoor contacts (Nike, maybe? They're like polarized sunglasses, but contacts and they make me look like an ALIEN).
