Anyone giving up anything for Lent?

We're Methodist, who typically don't give anything up for Lent, but I grew up Lutheran (in our church it was optional but I always did it) so I tend to still do something.

This year I'm giving up spending money on food other than groceries when I'm by myself. For example, stopping by the convenience store and getting a pop or running to Subway during the work day. I can still go out to eat socially, but that's about it.

I was just going to give up fountain pop but it seemed so trivial.  Does not drinking fountain pop really make me a better person? Probably not. It's not even really a sacrifice because it's not like I do it every day. I do however waste a ton of money on going out to eat when I have plenty of food I could eat purchased from the grocery budget.

Anyone else? I know a lot of non-religious or non-practicing people that give something up just for the sake of it, so I wasn't sure if anyone else was.

Re: Anyone giving up anything for Lent?

  • i grew up catholic and we gave up something, did not eat meat on fridays. even though my family no longer practices, i kept up with it for the most part through college and a bit afterwards. dh is lutheran (the church we go to now) and they don't give anything up. i won't be this year due to pregnany/nursing. i think that's allowed though.

good for you! it was always difficult for me to find osmething to give up that wasn't trivial, but that wasn't impossible either, lol.

  • We don't do Lent, but that sounds like a good thing to be giving up. I should consider it, too...

The ladies on MM would love this!

In my chuch we don't give anything up either.  I think it's funny when my non-practicing/religious friends give things up and make a big deal out of it.  My BF talks every single year about what she is giving up for weeks, but hasn't walked into a catholic church since the last wedding she probably attended.

  • I'm methodist as well and we don't give up anything, but D is a non practicing catholic, so I doubt he'll even remember.

But it sounds like that's a good thing to give up.
