Donating blood

Especially all the people that said in other threads they would donate organs, eggs and/or marrow to strangers (but haven't yet), do you donate blood on a regular basis? Why or why not?

I don't go in regularly mostly beacuse I don't keep track of the donations and timeline, but whenever they call me or I see one of the blood mobiles I make a donation. The last time I tried however they had to send me away because I had too much coffee that morning and my pulse was racing. haha Plus the needles always initially up my heartbeat a bit.

I know, I know. And to think... My dad is one of the directors at the Blood Bank in Tallahassee. Tallahassee Ladies, you may have seen him in their commercials. I've heard he's in them.

We're having a blood drive here March 29. Maybe I should put on my big girl panties & donate.

My answer is similar to cslseale's. I donate when I'm called and if I see the van in our office parking lot, but it's not on the forefront of my mind. I should donate more often though.

I was never around on campus during the times that there were the mobile units in undergrad and always had class in grad school. The one or two times I didn't have a schedule interference I was sick so I decided against it. I've never done it but I really need to look into doing so now. Sadly it's one of those things that I only think about when I see the mobile units. Does anybody donate regularly in the area who can point me in the right direction to start doing it regularly?

Until recently I was under the weight limit to give blood. Now that I am over that, yes I do give blood. DH feels very strongly about it- he got his gallon sticker last year.

I've donated almost every 8 weeks since I was 18. I started in high school at a blood drive and everywhere I've worked since has the blood mobile come out every 8 weeks. I've missed a time or two but I make a point to be there. I'm O+ so I feel that it's important that I donate.

I donated the day before I got my tattoo and now I have to wait a year to donate again. The first time the blood mobile comes out after March 2012 I'll be there.

I never have and honestly it freaks me out, which is weird because I'm all for giving away my organs and eggs. Now that you've brought up that very valid point I want to, but I can't because of my tattoo. Maybe when my year is up from my next one I will donate blood.

DH goes into the actual blood bank when he can't make it to the bloodmobile at work. Once you start, they'll call/email you when you're able to donate again. Plus they give you a card when you donate that tells you when the next time you're eligible is. Go to www.igiveblood.com

I never have because I hate needles, but I'm not totally opposed to it. I'd join the nestie blood giving GTG. lol

The other stuff (donating eggs and possible surrogacy for me) I would only do because I would get paid for it.

The mobile donation bus comes to our building at work. I give blood eveytime it is here. I think is every 2-3 months.

I donated up until I found out I was pregnant last year. I tried to donate last week, but was told come back when I stop breastfeeding.

I try to consistently, but I tend to pass out or fail the iron test and get turned away.

Until I got pregnant, I was always under the weight limit, then pregnant, now breastfeeding. I hope to be under the weight limit again soon.

I haven't been able to for a while because I was on heavy pain meds and then I had surgery. There was a blood drive at church last Sunday, but I didn't donate because I felt icky already.

I donate when I remember but I'm not as good about donating as I should be.

Yep. I go every 8 weeks, though sometimes I get deferred for low iron and then I OD on vitamins for a week and come back. haha. I have enough to get a Wii if they ever come back in stock. ::shakes fist::

I plan on doing it once Jonathan is weaned and I am sure I'm not anemic. I have to check into whether they'd let me though, since we lived in Europe for three years. Not sure if it makes a difference, though, especially since we've officially been back for a year now.

I've always been under the weight limit, and now can't because I'm pregnant, but it's something I've always wanted to do. Hopefully I'll stay above the weight limit postpartum long enough to donate.

I used to donate blood pretty regularly, but it would knock me out for the rest of the day and I would feel like sh*t. Then I got pregnant so I couldn't donate, and I'm still breastfeeding. Right now, I'm being selfish, and I know it's a great cause, but I just don't like the way it makes me feel.
