Would you apply to be the assistant of a position you didn't get?

Almost a year ago, I was up for (what I thought would be) an awesome job at (what I think is) a super-cool place to work. It was between me and one other person; I didn't get it.

This awesome place has just posted a just-created assistant manager position, which would report to the job I didn't get. I'm really considering applying for it - is it because I'm so freaking desperate?

Cons of the place:
The person I interviewed with was pretty sexist (I would've reported to him directly if I got the other job; I wouldn't with this one)
It would be a step down (obviously)
It would be less money (maybe) - and I'm probably going to get a raise at my current job 7/1 (beginning of our fiscal year)

Pros:
It's an awesome organization I'd LOVE to work for
It's much larger than my current org - I feel like that would give me more room to move up
This department is clearly experiencing growth if they're creating positions
It would be a shorter commute (about 20 minutes shorter)
It's not where I am now. I feel like this job is crushing my soul.

Re: Would you apply to be the assistant of a position you didn't get?

  • I think I would... as assistant manager to the manager, when the manager leaves you'd be a shoe in for their job, the job you originally wanted.

Based on all your pros, especially the one where you say it's not your current job which is crushing your soul, I'd say apply ASAP.

Also, sounds like a fun place to work!

ETA: Also, maybe it wouldn't necessarily be a step down since it's a larger organization.  Your title might be different, but maybe not an actual step down?  Just a thought, you'd know better than I would if that's true.

This and this alone would be my deciding factor. If you cannot stand your current job and feel like it's crushing your soul, you need to get out! There is nothing to lose by applying for the new job. Bonus, it sounds like there is room for promotion so you could move up.

  • I think you should go for it.

it's not like you already worked there, applied for a promotion, didn't get it, and then applied for the job one step down.

You're right - all of you!

I guess it might not necessarily be a step down - it might be a step sideways. Either way, it doesn't involve soul-crushing (hopefully!), so that's a good thing. I'm applying today; hopefully the sexist dude isn't involved in the hiring process this time!

I really hope I get SOMETHING soon; this boring job bs is all I ever post about anymore! Sorry!

    Thanks for listening :)

  • Good luck!  I would definitely go for it - if it will make you happier that's the most important thing.  Money comes and goes but happiness and having a non-crushed soul shouldn't!

  • Absolutely! (esp because it's at the zoo!!), but I think it would also show your commitment to wanting to work there.  I agree with lilbit, money is not the most important thing in a job (says the girl who is working for free right now lol), but it's true.
