Are you an organ donor on your DL? Why or why not?
Re: S/O Organ Donation
Absolutely. I've also made it VERY clear to DH and my family that I am an organ donor since they can override what it says on your DL. I'd also seriously consider donating parts of my body (like my brain) or whole body if I died from a disease that's hard to study while someone's alive (and the organs couldn't be used to help someone).
My grandmother had Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia, both of which are extremely difficult to study so my mom donated her brain to Alzheimer's research. I was incredibly proud of my mom for making that decision. My grandmother's brain went so quickly that she didn't leave final wishes so it was something my mom had to decide on her own and I think my grandmother would have been proud as well.
The reason I hear most often is that people say that if you're an organ donor, the hospital won't work as hard to save your life, because if you die, the organs can be used.
Hm, that's interesting. I think there was a Grey's Anatomy episode about that one time.
Well that's just silly....right?! How very un-oath like.
Yes. I can't see any reason not to be.
Yeah...I think most people in the medical profession would be upset that people actually think this. No offense to anyone who believes this, but it's an ignorant point of view IMHO.
I had someone spout off their mouth about how EMTs wont try as hard to save you if you are an organ donor. There are several flaws with this thinking but the two main ones are
1) Generally, no one looks at your license unless there are extra hands around. We are too busy trying to keep you alive
and
2) tissue/organ perfusion is a must in order to keep your organs viable so it isn't like we can just stop efforts and then dump you off at the hospital to use your organs.
OH and 3) Isn't that kind of counter productive to let someone die in order to save someone else?
Bottom line is, anyone who has that mentality deserves a slap in the mouth.
lol, now you got me all fired up.
This exactly.
Absolutely! And ditto on the DH and family knowing.
I also have a medical directive, should I become a vegetable for any reason. I don't want my family doing the Terri Schaivo (sp?) thing, and I'm fairly certain they would try. Sorry, my DH has final say there.

This sums up my situation. I probably should change that next time I get the chance.
