Four jobs everyone should have

Re: Four jobs everyone should have

  • Interesting! I have had one of those four jobs: server. I definitely view servers in a different way than I did before I started serving tables. I think I'm actually a little more critical and I expect more because I was a really good server and I gave good service. It can be a tough job... but it's one that can be easily mastered.

Oh, and one thing I didn't know before I waited tables. Servers have to tip out 2%-3% of their total sales for the night for be split among the hostesses and bus boys. So if you leave me a $0 tip, for whatever reason, then I paid to serve you.

  • Yup - empathetic is a word. :)

I've never had any of those jobs - but H has. I kinda dealt with customer service while working in the President's Office, but I know that's not the same thing. Watching H work through those types of job has made me realize just how much crap those people put up with and has, in turn, made me nicer towards them. Unless they treat me like crap from the time I walk in the door/get on the phone with them - then, I'm irritated the entire time. And they know it.

I am with you on this one!!  I waited tables throughout high school and my first year of college. Its the easiest job I have ever had.  I am definitely more critical as well - hey, sometimes sh!t goes wrong - apologize profusely, get a dessert comped for your customer, move on.  Not rocket science.

I have held all four of those jobs and I have the most empathy for manual labor jobs (this is the only job I have any empathy for, actually). Although those jobs aren't usually mentally difficult - they are physically difficult - yuck!

  • I have worked all of those jobs.

After being a server, I view other servers differently. I know that it's not the easiest job, but I also know that it's relatively simple - if that even makes sense. I get it if you're having a bad day... and I get it if the kitchen is the one who screws up the meals, so I tend to have sympathy. But, if you're just BAD, then I'll let you know.

I HATED being a retail clerk. But, I do make sure to fold clothes/put clothes where I got them when I'm done.

Customer service was probably my favorite... but I like people... and I'm friendly. I think people who are in customer service and are rude should look elsewhere for a job. There is no excuse for being rude and hateful.

Manual labor - while it was never an official job, I done manual labor my whole life. Built fence, tore down fence, worked on buildings... a good variety of everything. It was a part of growing up with my family and where I live. And, I believe that it builds great character. And, it makes you realize that things just don't happen - people work many, back breaking hours to make things like they are.

  • I haven't had any of these types of jobs lol. But, I feel like I'm a pretty empathetic person to begin with. I often put myself in other people's shoes.

Servers - if they're slow, grumpy, etc. I just give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they're just having a bad day or they're really busy. It takes a lot for me to get upset at a waiter and I've never left a below normal tip.

Retail - I usually try to put things back where I got them and refold clothes if I pick them up. And when I try things on, I put the things I don't want either on the rack they provide or back in their original spots.

Customer service - I've never had a customer service job, but I did have to deal with upset customers at a couple of my jobs. That was no fun. I try to be as nice and understanding as I can be when I call into places' customer service. But sometimes you have to be upset to get things fixed, that's when I make DH call, because I am no good at being mean and demanding!

Manual Labor - DH used to do manual labor at the place he works now (before he was moved up to management). I hated it, he was always so exhausted by the time he got home and his days were so long. I definitely have sympathy for people with manual labor jobs.

  • I only held the manual labor job. I worked in a plant nursery for a summer. My first day was unloading a truck of 5-gal shrubs, which I ended up being mildly allergic to. Not only was I unbearably sore the next day, I spent the entire day covered in itchy dots from where the barberry and holly poked me all morning.

I was in the hot sun for most of the day, the building had no a/c, and there were huge and scary spiders and snakes in every corner. I did, however, get to spend time outside on some nice days (it was a cooler summer for the most part) and saw some really beautiful things.

I don't think it made me appreciate anything, though, or be empathetic to anyone. It made me more gardening-savvy, though, and less likely to hold a job where I am paid most likely under the table.

This. I also did retail management in college.

  • I worked as a box attendant in the private suites at college football games for 3 seasons, but that's as close as I've gotten to having a server job. I definitely learned how demanding some people can be, even when I was working my hardest to keep them happy. But I also learned how laid-back other customers are- that's the kind I try to be.

I agree to an extent. Sometimes waitresses can be overwhelmed by demanding customers and make more mistakes than they would on a typical day. No, its not rocket science but when people (rude customers in particular) treat them poorly I immediately side with waitress.

Everyone makes mistakes and I try to be understanding. Of course I'm not referring to lazy services, merely the opposite.

  • Good article...  I agree, I have had 3 of 4 and it does teach you a ton!
  • I've worked all of these jobs and I am actually more critical of people who work in these fields except for manual labor.

Working as food server did, however, make me understand how a restraunt works so I know not to take it out on the server if my food is bad (although, that should be common sense, right?)

I agree Yes.  I waitressed all through college and it was actually my favorite non-professional job.  I've also worked retail and in customer service.  I haven't had a manual labor job, but DH does and the amount of physical labor him and his crew do (not to mention the long hours, working outside, and the mental part of the job) amazes me.  Total respect for those with manual labor jobs.
