We had Miley at the vet today. DH thought she had mites, I say she is an allergy dog. I was right. They did a skin scraping and found nothing. They have said she seems to be an allergy dog. So right now I was sent home with 2 meds, and a medicated shampoo and to use benedryl in between meds if she needs. The nearest dog dermatologist is down by MPLS and we are going to wait a bit and see what happens. If in 2 months she hasn't cleared up, the vet wants us to make an appointment and have her tested.
So now it's to find out what is aggravating her allergies. ugh....Mites would have been easier....
Re: awww...crap...re: Miley
If you find it's food related I would suggest something with a single protein source. People with dogs that suffer from allergies often have good luck with CA Natural. Are you near a Petco?
Poor Miley...hope she feels less scratchy soon!!
yeah, Petco is the ONLY one in town for us unless we goto TSC or the vet office for good foods. Right now she is on Nature's Balance Lamb and brown rice. Her treats are the same (lamb flavored) that come in the big thing that looks like sausage and we cut it up. I will look into the CA Natural. We were also told to do a GOOD dusting job and vacuum daily (which we do, but crappy vacuum cleaner) and see if maybe she is allergic to dust. And to also wash her sleeping mats in an allergy free type soap.
But all of it is easily done as long as she feels better. I kinda love my little mutt.
Nature's Balance is good too...stick with that if she's doing okay on it.
We have a Bissell Healthy Home vacuum and really like it.
Some fish oil on her food daily may help. We have a dog with itchy skin (not sure if it's allergies or dry skin) and we give a little squirt of fish oil on her food everyday and it helps a lot. In fact, she hardly scratches at all anymore. Can't hurt anyway...
Any fish based food is really good for skin issues. We also give Rusty a fish oil supplement every morning. I just got the ginormous economy fish oil from Costco.
Dogs can be allergic to who knows what. Rusty is allergic to grass, chicken, rice, some stuff that's used to make dog food (he's on a raw diet now), and has seasonal allergies on top of all that.
Natural Balance makes sweet potato mixes - I would switch to one of those - like sweet potato & bison or sweet potato and fish.
Good luck!!!
I would put her on a probiotic too. Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes and Probiotics is a good one. When we've been visiting relatives in your area of ND we've bought our dog's raw food from the pet store in the mall where Kmart is. I'm not sure if they still carry it but it was the Nature's Variety brand. Raw food can really help dogs with allergy issues. I wouldn't go to a dog allergist. I would spend money getting a holstic consultation and using alternative treatments. Here's a recommendation for a holistic vet for a phone consult. http://holistic-vet-care.com/ Phone consults aren't listed on the website but I know she does them. Good luck!
ETA: I should add that my friend used her for her dog with terrible allergies and she's a completely different dog. She recommends fish oil, probiotics, raw food, and there is another herb? that she also prescribed for her and she's had a miraculous recovery.

Oh, bummer. It figures since everything else in that mall had pretty much closed. I looked online and it doesn't look like there's anywhere else in GF that sells NV raw. You'd have to drive to Fargo or Cavalier.
