Car Registration

Soooo my car registration ran out in January. And if I get pulled over I am going to tell the cop that I honestly can not afford to pay it. Every time I have a bit of money I have to pay something and paying the Town of Randolph and the State of Maine for my car registration isn't on the top of my list. I can't wait until it is warm out so we don't have to run the furnace.

I hate being poor.

Re: Car Registration

  • I am right there with you.  I have taken up a second job as a personal assistant for my sister because I am so broke.

  • I hear you too!! We finally pinned down the amount of money we could "afford" to give MIL to help her move. Gave it to her and only the next day to receive a $500 bill from the hospital for x-rays MH had Sad I don't know where the hell I'm going to come up with that.

That does suck!  Be careful, I think they can arrest you Sad, but hopefully they will not!  We just looked at our budget this weekend, and it's miserable.  Between taxes (we owe), my medical bills, oil bills, student loans, gas, we have noooo money.  I'm not sure where the money to pay the taxes is going to come from.   We're tightening our belts for sure.

  • I so feel you on this and ditto the hate being poor :(

My inspection is up and I am afraid of what repairs the Jetta will need to pass (tires and timing belt at the very least), so I'm just pretending not to notice the sticker.

  • I usually like this time of year, since in the past it has meant sweet tax returns and warming weather. However this year decided to be a complete SOB, so on top of less than spring-like we've got a staggering $2000.00 tax bill to pay due to some wrong boxes being checked on past forms. Awesome!

  • I'm glad I'm not the only poor one on this board. My car deperately needs a tune up and new tires this spring as does dh's car. We also owe taxes. We thought we were getting a nice refund this year. Nope! We owe $1,000. Thankfully DH landed a freelance job last night that will cover the tax bill at least. We're trying so hard to get out of debt and get ahead, but seems like life keeps getting in the way.

  • yepppp.  Mine was also due in January and have yet to get it done.  I know that every state "gets their money one way or the other" but registration here is SO expensive.  Especially on new cars!!! I've been driving the speed limit specifically for that reason (not that I could afford a speeding ticket either!) Stick out tongue
  • Tripin - you can dO payment Plans with the hospital. As long as you make a payment evey mOnth they can't do anything. So you are better off doing that since it's no interest :) Shuta and heather, be careful. They can and will arrest you. Don't think having the baby in the car will stop them either. I used to see major slackers get off and then an old woman or mother with kids get pulled into the station :(
  • My inspection ran out in October... between not being able to find a good time to do it and having the money when we have the time... its just not working out... we have the money now because we did get some money for a return (thank you Jack and Keaghan!!) but now I don't have the time... I have to get it done before we go to DC though, so I am trying to get it done in the next week or two!

  • I don't feel poor but our budget is much tighter than our friends right now with Matt in school.  I feel your pain.  I have dinner out with a couple of friends tomorrow night and their households both make serious money.  They keep wanting to do these $75 dinners and I have to keep saying "No, I can't afford that."  It's getting frustrating.

This! I used to get really frustrated when we lived down in Annapolis, and our friends would always want to go out for crazy expensive meals, when we were clearly on a tight budget. It always makes me think of the episode of Friends where they all go out for a really ritzy dinner, and Joey, Pheobe and Rachel are freaking out b/c the other three wanted to split the bill evenly after they only had apps. Damn you, financial constraints!!!

Ugh! That is tough. This kept happening with one of my girl friends - she lives in So Po and I'm in Lisbon Falls and getting there and back is a quarter tank of gas, plus dinner and drinks - I just couldn't do it and she kept asking every single week. And now she won't speak to me because I don't drive down there all the time but I spend time with Matt on week nights. Hello! He lives 5 minutes away and we buy coffee at the MOST!

Wow. Um, sorry for the tangential vent there. Money, grrrrrr. :/

  • This is the reason why I am working so much overtime.  We are finally getting some relief this week and next, between bonuses, taxes, and raises...but we are still so much in debt it's pathetic.  We will be able to pay off two CC by the end of April but we still have oil n such to pay for.

I've needed an inspection since December but I don't see the point in getting it done, and the work done for it to pass, if I'm going to get rid of it in a few months.

And my friends just don't get it.  They want to eat out all the time...if I don't go, that is more money I can save, and an opportunity to spend some time out of the house with my husband, when he and I decide we should go out together.

  • I can't believe how expensive it is to register a vehicle in Maine. My husband and I are lucky to have somewhat older vehicles so we get by, but when we were in renewing his registration my jaw dropped when the man ahead of us registered his new truck.

Its funny because I'm originally Canadian, and we most recently moved from NYS and thought they taxed the crap out of us there... :S

I always forget about my registration. I never think to put in my calendar when it's due and I dont look at my plates on a regular basis so I've actually been pulled over a few times for this. I wish Maine would put the registration on the windshield like in NY. Would make it so much easier for me to remember!  I've probably been pulled over about 6 times in my life for this and have never gotten a ticket. Always just a warning and I then go and get it taken care of withing a week or so. I would worry about getting pulled over twice within the same time frame though.

Does Maine not mail a bill every year? This is the only reason I remember, even though we have windshield stickers here in TX!

    Nope you have to remember...

I do ours through online registration (which I think you get charged a "convenience fee"- how convenient) but you can also set up an annual reminder email to be sent while you're in there.  It's the only reason I remember and while the fee is a "screw you" it's worth it to not have to go to City Hall or the DMV or wherever.

I hate all things related to cars. I wish I were back in Boston only for the subway and bus system- I got to read, not get stressed about traffic, and barely had to worry about my car as I only drove it to my parents' and the store!

  • NH's gift to all residents is that you have to re-register your vehicle during your birth month.  Thanks, NH.  No good way of pleading ignorance here.  And, they send a bill each year as a reminder.

Unfortunately, we had to buy a new vehicle for DH (he'll be doing all the transportation to and from daycare in the fall, and his Escape was literally sh*tting the bed, and was a huge gas guzzler), in January, which meant a partial year registration (still very expensive!) in February, along with my full year regular registration also!  And, now 2 car payments, our disgustingly huge mortgage, payments toward our new furnace (which allows us to have lower fuel bills, but is more expensive up front), payments on surprise maternity care bills, etc.

Then, my baby shower was a total bust, so all the money we thought we'd be able to use for extras (like building a closet in the munchkin's room), now needs to go to essential items.

I'll need to work my second job again as soon as the night shift projects start up again, and will need to do as many projects as I can this summer after I am cleared to go back to work and before I return to my real job at the end of my maternity leave.  I so desperately want to just stay home with my baby.  Crying

It's frustrating to hear that so many of us work so hard, are so conservative, and yet are still feeling the crunch of our budgets.

This. If I had a money tree I would share with you all.
