Questions about applying to a school district

Hello! I am usually on the knot boards and since they've been so useful I thought I'd try asking a question here.

I am in my final few months of graduate school to be a school psychologist. I am ready to start looking for jobs in a school district. I can imagine it would vary from state by state or even from districts, but when do most people find their jobs in a public school district to start in the next school year? Would you recommend applying to jobs as they are available (I've been looking online and nothing is open for next year yet) or just send in your resume and application for them to keep on file? Thanks!

  • Schools typically starting hiring in the spring for the following school year.  Give it another month, and you should start to see more openings.  Also, look for job fairs, these are great places to get your resume out and network!

  • Depends on the district - often the better districts in my area begin hiring early. I got hired in December for my job starting in August.

I'd suggest sending out resumes and cover letters to all the districts you can, regardless of there being a job available. If one becomes available, send another set. It is SO COMPETITIVE right now that every piece of leg work counts!

  • Go onto schoolspring.com many school districts are posting all job positions there.  You can even upload your resume so all you need to do is click and attach.  You can also set up a login in order to be notified of any positions being posted in your area.
  • I'm not sure where you are, but where I am in Florida, the schools won't post vacancies until April or May. They hire starting in May and that can go into the school year, sometimes into October! It definitely can't hurt to get your resume out now.
  • I know there are districts in my area who specify on their website to NOT send in any paper materials at all- They want everything to be submitted on the online employment link.
