I work way too much

Its not a matter of overtime since I am Salary, but I am looking for suggestions in how to better balance my time at work and home. In a few months I will be moving so the hour commute and my carpool partners will ensure I'm leaving at 5pm (on time) then. However, I need to practice cutting back now. I probably should talk to my supervisor about my workload, but after just receiving a raise I don't want to seem like I am slacking off now that I got the money. We are also shorthanded as it is. Any encouragement, ideas to trick myself into working normal hours, whatever :)

 Have a great day!

Re: I work way too much

  • Ask if you can change your schedule to 9/80's, 4/10's or work from home one day per week.
  • Minimizing interruptions helps.  Sometimes this means working from home, other times it means turning off the phones, other times it means closing the door to my office.  I will also take my laptop to the other end of the office where people do not expect me to be to get a few minutes of uninterrupted time.
  • I have this problem too.  When I'm backed up I will shut my office door and have un-interupted focus time. GL

  • Set your hours and what you get done you get done.  I don't get paid enough to work more than 40 hours a week.  Set your priorities for the day and just make sure those get done. And don't feel bad about not working!  You earn your time off/ personal life!
  • Thanks Ladies! I appreciate the ideas for sure! While I can't really shut the door (cubie land!), I can set aside time to work on my personal projects. Its good to remember I don't need to help everyone that comes to me right then, which is my biggest issue I think. I definitely get lost in "well, someone has to do it..." and end up taking on a lot myself.

I may have to see what flexibility I can figure out for the days once I move - great Idea!

     Again, thanks :)
