Cabin PIP (Lots of them!)
Here are some pictures of the cabin that we went to look at today.

Drew is ready to write an offer today, but I'm really hesitant. It's about 30ft from the water, so we know that it's going to get flooded. The house has been built to handle that. The bottom boards come off so that the water can be cleaned out. Then, we'd just have to clean the walls and floor with bleach and vinegar.
It's small. Like, really, really tiny. And I'm tiny. So if it's small to me, it's really small. Drew keeps trying to remind me that it's meant to be a place to come to be outside on the water. I'm not really sold on it. Drew wants it for an investment property so we can sell it when the market turns around and make a good profit on it. It's priced for us to be able to do that. We're also talking about going in on it with one of Drew's coworkers, so it'd really only cost us like $250/month. I'm just not jumping up and down with excitement about it.

It's cute! I love how many windows face the river -- that's the whole point of the cabin, so why not? It looks like a cozy place to get away.
My $0.02, if you're interested (and who says you have to be?)
I don't think it's ever a good idea to purchase real estate with someone who is not your legal spouse without an express agreement about responsibilities and commitments. You said you see a potential major issue -- improvements. What about liabilities? Say the other guy's family is staying there and someone injures themselves -- would you be psyched about him suing Drew for shoddy workmanship on the improvements (I'm not saying anything about Drew's home improvement skills, it's just a hypothetical scenario). If he really wants to buy it as an investment with someone else, and possibly even rent it out, then they should consider incorporating to shield themselves from liability if any guest injures themselves there or if the other partner decides to do something stupid with his half of the deed or mortgage -- it won't eff up your personal assets.

I can definitely understand being hesitant about it, I would be too. To me, if you're not super excited about it.. it's not worth it. For a purchase like that I think you should be in love with every aspect of it, not just the idea.
