Just got back from my 28 wk appt.
I've gained 10lbs in 4 weeks. How the hell did that happen?! I go for my glucose screening on Saturday and now I am freaked that I have Gestational Diabetes. I mean, I can't even tell you how I gained that much. So far I had only been gaining about a pound/week which is pretty standard. I feel horrible.

Re: OMFG
Thanks. Unfortunately weight gain at that pace isn't allowed. My Dr is really laid back and was pretty concerned about it.
I've been going over everything I've been eating for the last month and honestly it doesn't seem like I went crazy or anything. I've even cut back on the ice cream the last few weeks. Bleh.
Are you swollen? That would be my worry. It has nothing to do with gestational diabetes by the way. There are no symptoms of GD and fat, skinny, tall, short, types of women get it.
Actually, now that you say that I have noticed my hands and feet are a little more swollen the last few days. Is that GD related or something else?
Swelling can make you gain weight quickly. Ie you have some water weight. It has nothing to do with GD.
Most regular OBs and midwives are capable of handling GD patients. You just have to count carbs and test your blood sugar.. maybe take meds, maybe do insulin shots. It is that your pancreas has to produce 9 times the insulin when you are pregnant so it has to work really hard. Unless you have a huge amount of relatives with Type 2 diabetes, I really wouldn't worry too much about it.
Thank you, that's very helpful.
As far as the swelling goes, hopefully it's water weight.
I've been really lucky and never had my weight fluctuate much, this was a big shock for me and I feel like I did something wrong. I think I just need to be more careful about what I'm eating and make sure that even if it's raining outside I get some form of exercise. Holy toledo though, 10lbs?!
I wouldn't worry too much about GD.. Chances are you don't have it... If by chance you do... Its easily managed npby diet. My good friend had it and it was so much less scary than I thought.
just to add to be cautious... If it's swelling pleSe watch out for signs like dizziness, blurred vision, etc and call your Dr
Ask them for an U/S. From month 5 to month 6 I gained about 10lbs and freaked out. Then steadily gained after. My doc was on maternity leave so when she came back (I think she saw me at like 32 or 34 weeks) she gave me the huge stink eye and thought I was eating a ton and I told her I wasn't and told her I was actually eating pretty healthy.
She measured my stomach again and said it was 2 weeks ahead and sent me for an U/S right away. They said I had extra amniotic fluid also known as polyhydramnios.
Sometimes it can mean Gestational Diabetes but I had already been screened and actually had a really low score. It can mean the baby isn't digesting right but my doc said it's better to have too much vs not a lot. I did get to see Ava every single week after that to monitor it which was great. And everytime they asked if I had GD.
I got fantastic 3D's because of it though haha
I ended up gaining 41lbs and most of that was that fluid however you will not retain fluid everywhere like some think...it's just amniotic fluid.
So do not worry ok
Thank you. What's weird is that I'm still measuring the same (right on time as he out it) If it is the same at the next appt I will ask for an ultrasound.
I'm so glad you all chimed in, thanks ladies!
