So we had the meeting lastnight, and I am relieved to tell you that keeping Cass back is the last option for everyone.
They had us fill out a parent questionaire and consent for and IEP, which is needed in order for Cassidy to get any extra help/accomodations for testing and learning in her day to day school work. Her teacher is really an amazing teacher, and is willing to try different things that will help Cassidy.
They are also referring her for further assessments to find any discrepancies, and to determine if there are any learning/memory issues.
In the meantime her teacher feels that trying to push Cassidy to do any extra work other than her homework assigned might work against us, until we can determine if she needs a different approach, etc.
I feel better, and have more hope that the school(teachers) are doing the right thing for her. If anyone has any more advice, or points that I should be aware of on our journey please feel free to offer.
Another note of interest: I asked the teacher if she was seeing this as a common thing among the students that Cassidy was in Grade 4 with last year? Her response was very interesting, she basically said yes, without saying yes.
So now I am quite sure, that Cassidy is behind because she was already struggling in school and then her grade 4 teacher was an idiot who didn't teach the class a damn thing in grade 4. Which of course made her even more behind. That teacher is no longer with the school.
Re: Daughter School Update
I'm glad you had a successful meeting with the school! I'm in aggreance with the teachers that pushing your daughter to do any extra work other than projects and homework could result in an adverse effect...it can actually result in a "divorce of learning" where the student just gives up completely and loses all interest in learning. My parents are dealing with this very issue with my younger brother.
My best advice with everything is to assert to the teachers that you are on their team and want to work with them to help your daughter succeed. My parents have had great success in asking teachers to call or E-mail them the minute my brother falls behind or doesn't turn in an assignment. And don't be afraid to call or E-mail them to ask whatever questions you have. The better informed and in-the-loop you are with the teachers, the better you can help your daughter excel.
Good luck with everything!!!
This exactly. I'm really happy that it went well and everyone seems to want to work together-it really is the best thing for your daughter.
