Question for dog ladies
Do you guys take your dog to the vet once a year or twice?

If our dogs didn't have the issues they have (seizures, allergies, ear infections, etc.), we'd only take them once a year. Unfortunately, they end up there 3-4 times a year, if not more.

We go to Hidden Hills down on Ft. Caroline. We like the vets and have never had a problem and fortunately our dogs are both healthy. We just got a postcard in the mail though that it's time for their six month checkup and H and I were questioning if that's really necessary. It says for a HW test (they're UTD and have always gotten HW/flea monthly), fecal something (ew) and a "wellness checkup."
Of course we'll take them if necessary, but we were just thinking this is maybe an unnecessary upsell. This is the first time they've both been over one so we've never had to deal with it before!
Honestly, that sounds like just an extra visit for them to make cash. I'd skip it.
I get their shots and heartworm tests done annually through the Pet Caravan. I take Pumpkin to the vet for a wellness visit every other year, and will take Charlotte and Belle this October for a wellness visit, which will have been 2 years since they've gone.
As long as they're acting normal and up to date on shots and HW meds, I don't worry about them and have had no problems.
Of course if something odd is going on ( like when Pumpkin was having awful allergies/scratching) I will take them, but other than that it's every other year until they're older (maybe 8-10?) then I'll probably do yearly.
My vet told me dogs never need the HW test again as long as they have been on the HW medicine. He said it's a money making ploy.
I take Harley every 3 months to get her anals cleaned b/c I'm not doing that!
Just ignore the post card. I wouldn't go in for a "wellness" exam. Brodie only goes more than once because it's for a shot. We literally walk right in, do his weight, they give him his shot, we pay (for just the shot) and we walk out. The heartworm & "wellness" stuff are only done once a year w/the bulk of the vaccinations.
I just ignore them, you're on an auto-mailing list, it's not like they KNOW you didn't come and will judge your dog parenting!
When you want to make an appt., you call and it won't be a big deal.
I've also found that most vets won't sell you HW meds if you don't have a test every year. Because it's a prescription, you can't technically get it w/o their ok. However, I do 1800petmeds and I put in my vet's contact info, and highly doubt they contact the vet... but I do get them tested each year anyway. It's just $25 at the caravan.
Annually, sure. I'd do that for peace of mind anyway. But every six months? That's what I'm asking about.

But I know that it's more important for me to drop $$$ on nylabones each month to keep them happy rather than have wellness visits. I'm sure the pack would agree, anyway!
I actually have nylabones on my to do list today in my BB! Actually it says "shitton of nylabones" because we're down to like one of the little cigar ones. The rest have been carved into prison shanks.
LOL, thanks. That's the consensus we came to too.
I call them 'nubbins' when they get that small. I usually get the 3 pack of the like, 'hardcore chewers' and they last maybe 2 months or less. Charlotte goes spastic at night and starts throwing it in the air and then running around tossing it and rolling on it, so I get paranoid she'll choke and take them away when they're like, down to 1/3.
But yeah, Nylabones are the shiz, and I don't want to think about life (or the furniture) without them.
This isnt true and I cant believe your vet told you that. Heartworms can break through prevention and if you dont test once a year and miss it, it can be very detrimental to your dogs health. Heartworms kill, that alone would make me check for it at least once a year.
ETA: Maybe I should answer the original question. I wouldnt go to a 6 month check up, its just a money making ploy.
I also wanted to add that I wouldnt buy meds from an online place, those meds aren't regulated or checked, only the ones you can get from the vet are.
Are you sure about this? Because the Pet Caravan people told me that they try to be competitive with 1800Petmeds, and are generally -/+$5 from their prices and that it's the exact same stuff.
Oh yeah, they try to be competitive and in theory the meds are the same, but they aren't regulated. Also, say you've been giving a certain HW preventative and your dog tests positive for the worms. If you've been getting your meds at the vet you have a record of purchase for the manufacture. Usually that shows that you've been giving preventative regularly and the manufacture will pay for your HW treatment. Also, a lot of online companies store their meds overseas and you really dont know the quality and date of the drug until it gets to you. That's not a risk Im willing to take because of what I've been through with Salty.
Interesting, I didn't know about the manufacturer paying for treatment if they do get HW. I try to buy from the Caravan unless I get a good coupon code for 1800petmeds.
Have you heard about the new generic HW pill that was released recently? My mom took her dog to the vet yesterday and he recommended it to her, said it's about half the price.
My big gripe is with flea and tick, the HW isn't as bad, but flea and tick is EXPENSIVE! Especially when you have to use Confortis over Frontline or whatever. I spend way more on dog Rx than on myself... wish they could use my $10 copay!
I havent heard about the new generic pill, I have to ask my vet about it. I used to use comfortis and interceptor because Manny was bigger and those weren't known triggers for his epilepsy. Now that I just have Salty and he's smaller I can use Revolution for both flea, tick, and heartworm. It cuts down on the price for me a lot.
We would only do once a year if they didn't have issues. Juno is there a few times a year due to the arthritis in her hips, either getting it checked or for bloodwork to check her kidney functions. Cabela seems to have an issue with allergies and impacted anal glands when her allergies get really bad so we have to take her to get them expressed since I would rather pay the vet's office to do that than learn to do it.
