Hardwood Floors

Hiya ladies...first time on these boards...

In the process of closing on our first house and it kinda hit me (of all things!) it's original hardwood flooring throughout and I have no idea how to clean them!  I have only had carpeting in my life, and so am very handy with a vacuum, but have no clue what to do with hardwood.

It's light wood, which I'm told shows less dust and dirt than dark, buuuut please help! :-) And they have been refinished, but how hardy is hardwood?  I mean you can't go sliding furniture around right?

TIA :-)

Re: Hardwood Floors

  • Just plain old hot water will clean the floors. Fill a spray bottle and work your way around the floors... spray, mop up, spray, mop up, etc... until you have the floor clean. Just don't let the water puddle.

You can probably slide some light items (it all depends on the quality of the finish and the wood type), but do it slowly so you can stop if you see any damage happening (better to stop after an inch rather than having a scratch the whole way across your floor). You can get little moving things at Target... they're little plastic discs with felt on the bottom. Just put a disc under each leg of whatever you're moving, slide the item to it's new home, and pull the discs back out.

I have hardwood floors throughout my house, and that's what I use. And just a note so you don't feel horrible in a year when you starting noticing the little tiny marks... no matter what you do, the floors will not stay perfect forever. Wood, by nature, is a soft material and it will get scratched and dented.

  • Get a Swiffer and use the sweep feature on it weekly, once a year, scrub the floors with a Murphy's oil soap solution. (The directions are on the bottle).

To move things around on top of the floor, get scraps of carpeting (or an old rug).  insert the scraps under the furniture (upside down) and slide the furniture around.  Our house is from 1850s and has the original hardwood floors.  They are not perfect but they still look great.

  • I use a spray bottle with water and vinegar and am considering the Bona floor care system since I've heard good things. Our floors were just refinished when we moved into our house in Nov. 2010, and we already have lots of lovely scratches from our dogs.:(

  • These are all great thnx ladies...I hope I have the energy/consistency to maintain them properly...they look really good right about now...!
  • I use an O'Cedar microfiber dry dust mop daily and once a week I use it wet with warm water and vinegar mixed.  I love this mop bc the microfiber head is machine washable.
I BILLION PERCENT DISAGREE with you!!
  • We use the swiffer on ours.  They have a cleaner which is for hardwood floors.  Never had a problem!!
  • I have tried a few products and have been unhappy with all. Finally tried the Bona system, and I'm in love! They sell it online or at Bed Bath Beyond. I vacuum the floors, then use the Bona Cleaner, then the Bona Polish. And they stay shiny and clean for 1-2 months before I do it again.
