Phone Interview....what does it consist of?
This is my first phone interview ever!
I know that questions are typically what I would expect from a traditional in-house interview; however, still seems new to me.
Can anyone give me an idea or advice on phone interviews?
Thanks!
Re: Phone Interview....what does it consist of?
Yep, it's a lot like an in-person interview. Many places use it as a screening to see who they want to bring in for a face-to-face interview.
Have a copy of your resume. Have a notepad and pen available to take notes
Take the call in a quiet place without distractions. Don't eat or drink while you're onn the phone
Some people suggest dressing as you would for an interview, and taping a face on the wall so you have something to focus on.
Smile. They'll hear it in your voice.
Don't be afraid to say I don't know or ask for clarification

I've had a phone interview and found it helpful to not be in my pjs. Sit up straight, smile, etc, just like you would in a real interview.
In addition, I told my friends and family (mainly my mom) who call during the day about it, so I wouldn't have to worry about another call coming through and missing something.
It is typically very much like an in-person interview, and often helps to screen the initial candidates to see who the company would like to bring in for the next round.
Usually the interviewer asks you to go over your resume and discuss past experience (just be prepared to highlight the areas of your resume that most directly apply to the position you're interviewing for) - and may ask follow-up questions that get slightly more detailed in order to get a feel for how your skills and knowledge could fit the position.
In a first-round phone interview, the questions tend to be more direct and related to your experience than behavioral (e.g. "tell me about a time you faced an ethical dilemma"), at least in my experience, but it wouldn't hurt to do a quick Google search on common interview questions and have some answers prepared, just in case.
Good luck to you!
I love phone interviews because you don't have to wear a suit! The initial phone interview is usually a screening by HR. They just want to run through your experience, probably discuss salary and why you'd be a good fit for the position. As others said, have a copy of your resume in front of you and write out notes regarding relevant experience you've had that applies to this job.
Good luck and hope you make it to the next round!
