Plants/flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies?

Im wanting to plant a cutting flower garden (from seed) that will attract hummingbirds and butterflies, and I would like it if they came back every year.  I would prefer that they not attract wasps, bc we already have a problem with those (if wasps are even attracted to certain flowers, I dont even know).  What are your suggestions?

  • I honestly don't know how you get around attracting wasps. Also keep in mind that some wasps are actually benefical because they eat other garden pests. I find that if I just stay out of the wasps way, they don't bother me. To minimize wasps, you can always put out some fake wasp nests around your house.

The following link was quite useful for me for planting flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

  • We just have too many wasps, so many that I hate being outside :(  They also always burrow into the roof of our covered patio, and have made a nest (we think) into our roof.  I think I will try that fake nest this year and see what happens.

    Thanks for the links!

  • I used a regional wildflower mix last year that attracted hummingbirds like crazy. Be careful though some plants that attract wildlife are invasive (in my area  blackberries and butterfly bushes are labeled as such).

I don't know if they attract wasps or not - but Cleomes or "Spider Flowers" are great for attracting butterflies. I had one hummingbird but I had them planted in a bad location, so I blame myself. They are fairly easy to maintain.

passionvine (host plant for gulf fritillary), milkweed (host plant for monarchs), porterweed, pentas all really seem to attract butterflies here.

    Have you seen my monkey?
  • They like my lantana, butterfly bush, and ruella. The big honey bees also really like my azaleas.

  • Wasps are predators so they might not be attracted to your flowers, but the caterpillars themselves.

Parsley and fennel are host plants for black swallowtails.  Other host plants are snapdragons, mallow, spicebush, and any of the legumes.  For nectar try coneflower, black eyed susan, asters, liatris, carolina jasmine, trumpetvine, guara, scarlet sage, agastache, helianthus, and false indigo.

Butterfly bush is invasive, I would not recommend planting it.

  • We had a Fuchsia hanging plant on the porch that the hummingbirds liked so much they built a nest in it.  They also liked our lilacs.  Since both the fuchsia and lilac are similar shades of bright pink, could hummingbirds be attracted to bright pink?

Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red actually.  It can be flowers or just red objects with flowers/nectar nearby.

I did not know this. I guess this explains my frequent hummingbird visitors. I always plant red geraniums in my flower beds.

  • I've got two small milkweed plants in a pot and there are 13 monarch caterpillars on it right now.
