Budget Question

I have a big budget on a spreadsheet, and I love it!!  We have lots of mortgage debt so have to track every doller.

Looking at it, I started wondering how much everyone spends on grocerys a week.  We go shopping every Sunday, and eat out/get takeout maybe once a week.  We spend about 18% of our monthly budget on food.

How does this stack up with the rest of you?  Is food one of your biggest expenses?

Re: Budget Question

  • H and I did a spreadsheet like this and realized we were spending 15% ($800/month!!!) on food/alcohol.  We're trying to get it down to $600 now, but I was seriously shocked.  We recently started couponing and meal planning, which has helped.

  • I spend roughly $60ish a week on groceries - and then we eat out quite a bit.  We eat out for lunch once or twice a week and then out to dinner on the weekends.  I would guess that we spend about $250 a month on groceries and about $200 a month eating out for a total of $450 - which is about 18% of our monthly budget.

  • We spend about $75-$100 a week on groceries. I'm not sure what percentage of our budget it comes out to, but it's not quite our biggest expense.
  • We try and only eat out 1x per week, so our grocery bill is (or should be) $350/month & our restaurant budget is $150. We do get coffee at Starbucks everyday during the week, but we don't go out to lunch so we justify it that way! :)

  • wow, I think we have to make a spearsheet too. I wanted to use Mint.com but DH does not like the idea of giving up our passwords. He wishes they had agreements with the banks where this information would be shared without the need for our passwords.

We most probably spend too much on food too, if I had to guess would be some $600 a month.

  • e_jakiela - this budget calculator is pretty good, and it dosen't matter what currency your using.

  • We spend $80 a week on groceries, so about $320/month. ?But that includes things like kitty litter, dish soap, laundry detergent, soap, razors, alcohol to have at home, etc. ?Everything we buy in a store pretty much. ?And then we spend $40 a week on fun. ?We save that up for a bit if we're eating out. ?I also work extra hours a lot, so that sometimes goes towards fun, in which case we eat out more often. ?
