So, on the way into work this morning, two songs played back to back that were on our "First Dance" shortlist:
When I Said 'I do' by Clint and Lisa Hartman Black, and Making Memories of Us by Keith Urban.
Of course, big sap that I am, I got all weepy on the drive in singing these songs and thinking about the whole process of selecting our first dance song, and how in trying to find the song that best described our relationship/feelings for that dance, we actually came across so many that we had a tough time choosing! So, on my ipod, I put together a short list - which we then sat down one evening and listened to together, and made our choice. I totally love every song that made our list - and the dozens that didn't - and I wish we could have had a million first dances!
What songs made your "short lists"? In addition to the two above, the rest of ours:
Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney
My Love - Paul McCartney
Biggest Part of Me - Ambrosia
The Book of Love - Peter Gabriel
Heaven - Bryan Adams
I Believe in You and Me - The Four Tops
Knocks Me Off My Feet - Stevie Wonder
Sea of Love - Cat Power version
Love is Here to Stay - Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald
You and Me - Life House
In My Life - Sam Harris version
Our Love - Natalie Cole
Ain't Love Something? - Sam and Ruby
April Love - LTD
Living on Love - Alan Jackson
and finally, the song that we chose:
You're The One - Shane McGowan & The Popes (featuring Maire Brennan)
Did anyone else have to 'edit' down, or did you already know which one you were going to use?
Re: First Dance Shortlist?
Well we had already decided on a song, and for the life of me I can't remember what it was right now, but I'm sure it was country. Maybe Brad Paisley? I don't know, but what I do know is that another couple that DH was friends with used the song and we considered it "tainted" from that point on. We still don't like this girl he married, she's really young and totally acts it and basically cut his friends out of his life. She was a total bridezilla before the wedding and basically hates us all.
So our song ended up being Keith Urban "Only You Can Love Me This Way" which we actually ended up liking a lot better than our first choice.
OMG I so love that song!!!!
I think that his lyrics are so beautiful and heartfelt - and it make it extra nice knowing that he wrote them with his new wife and baby in mind. Too many amazing songs, only one first dance :-)
Dang Stac you're short list is a long list!!
We had considered "Lucky" by Jason Mraz and Colbie Callait but wanted to do our super fun choreographed dance, so that narrowed down our choices!
LOL@ Rach! I agree that is a long short list!
My short list was two songs:
Alicia Keys - Love Me Like You'll Never See Me Again
Alicia Keys - If This World Were Mine (Luther Vandross original)
Shaun decided the first one was best so that was that!
Shmel's Blog
For Once in my Life (Michael Buble)
Only You (Commodores)
Here & Now (Luther Vandross)
There's Nothing Better than Love (Luther Vandross & Gregory Hines)
Forever (Kiss)
Kissing You (Keith Washington)
All My Life (K-Ci & JoJo)
We ended up using the bolded one for our 1st dance choice, but still used all the other ones in the reception - the last 3 were used during the anniversary dance and we walked in to the Michael Buble song. Heh - I danced with one of the teenaged nephews to Here and Now. LOL
Hahaha!!! Yes, Ladies - you would be correct! My short list is "relatively" short...lol...you should see the list of songs that didn't make the list :-))
And we also used some of these songs during the dinner hour, when we had the DJ play romantic, soft songs low while our guests ate.
We came in to "Lovely Day" the Bill Withers song, but as done by SOUL Assylum (on the Bodyguard movie soundtrak, which has a nice uptempo beat), and our Anniversary dance for married couples ended up being "Something That We Do" by Clint Black...sigh...happy memories!!!
and Cin: How do I know you're from Detroit by your song choices???
Picking a song is pretty much the only wedding related task I asked DH to do. Which, of course, meant I had to nag him and cajole him until he finally gave me a few songs to listen to the day before our final meeting with the DJ. He had a couple songs that were a little too fast-paced, or with words that I didn't think were appropriate... I don't remember most of them except for Springsteen's Marry You, and I believe there were ones by Foo Fighters and REM.
The only one I really liked was "Better Together" by Jack Johnson. I also wanted to do "Lucky" and he liked that too, so it came down to those two. We couldn't decide between the two. I wanted Lucky a little more, he wanted Better Together. Finally on the way to the DJ I said we should do Better Together - because I knew he liked it, and I figured it was more unique than Lucky (based on the responses here, I guess I was right!). And now Better Together is one of my favorite songs.

I love this story!!! It is so sweet when High School Sweethearts get married :-)
H and I were finally down to "Sea of Love" and the one that we eventually chose. It was a really close call, because "Sea of Love" was the first song that we ever danced to - on a cruise we went on during our first year of dating. I can't hear it without thinking back to that night!
Haha, well...we did date in high school for about three months. He dumped me TWO weeks before said prom...prick. Then, he danced with me all night, and whispered in my ear how much he missed me during that song. Then, people started telling him a bunch of crap that was completely false, so we didn't get along for about a year and a half. Then, we started dating again when I was a freshman in college. : )
We danced to "I can't help falling in love" by Elvis. Our second dance is "You'll always be the one I love" by Dean Martin. We went VINTAGE!!! We didn't have "a song" and DH is so NOT sappy, so we just picked it becuase they both had beautiful lyrics, and OMG those voices!!!! Classic.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who wells up while listening to these songs in the car, Stacy!!! haha
