So, I was finally able to get a real update, since the one from voicemail, text and my brother were less than clear/reliable.
My mom has what they believe to be a clot in her heart. She had been having some vision issues where she would momentarily lose a portion of her vision, but it would come back. The eye doc sent her for an echocardiogram and that showed a suspicious spot that they wanted a better look at. So, Tuesday she went in for a TransEsophogeal echo (TEE), ie, she had to swallow the echo thingy so they could look directly at her heart from her esophagus.
That test showed the clot in her heart. They've not 100% sure that it is a clot, but are reasonably sure. If it is, she's basically been a walking time bomb. They think that her episodes with her vision might have actually been mini strokes from thrown clots.
The doctor was waffling about sending her home to rest or admitting her, but decided it would be easiest to admit her because of all the further tests that were required.
Now, she's in the hospital for the next few days while they figure out the correct dosage of the clot busting meds. Too much and she could bleed out, too little and it won't work. She should be there through Friday. After that, she's home resting for a week while the drugs do their thing and then she goes back for another TEE to see if the clot is gone.
If it is, yay, if it's not, then it might not actually be a clot. She said their other theory was that it was "vegetation" from a virus, but that that was less likely because she didn't have any other virus symptoms. (My coworker joked that she has a "beet" in her heart. har har har) But only time will tell.
Right now she's just bored out of her skull. As far as I know she's still in the ER waiting to for a bed to open up in the regular part of the hospital. I'm going to visit her after work today to keep her company.
Thanks for all the T&Ps and all that other stuff. Also, for making it this far, here's a cookie!
It's a compost cookie. I think I might have to make some of these this weekend.
Re: Mom update
so scary.... sounds similar too to what Serena Williams just had, although I think her clots were in her lungs. I'll keep your mom in my thoughts and that the medicine works quickly and correctly.
Any reason for why the clots might have form in the first place? From a bruise or something else?

That cookie looks amazing!
I'm not sure. She had a DVT (deep vein thrombosis aka a clot) shortly after her wedding to my step-dad back in 2002, but they figured that was caused by her being on BCPs for a bit, the stress of the wedding and a lot of standing. I'll ask her tonight.
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
Hope things go in the right direction for your mom and she's out of the hospital quickly. I'll be thinking about you guys.
And please tell me that is a calorie free cookie?
Sounds like a scary situation but I'm glad she's doing well.
oh man, so very scary! thank goodness she had everything checked out right away.
have they checked for atrial fibrillation? a close family friend had that, which causes blood clots in the heart.
sending lots of t&p her way.
Continued vibes! I hope her health clears up and that she doesn't have to spend too much time in the hospital. =(
The cookie looks amazing!

Ditto to this. I didn't have much time to post earlier today in between things and wanted to come back and ask this. It would make the most sense. If you need any kind of medical knowledge/opinion outside of what's going on or if you have any questions, please PM me. I find that especially with the Canadian healthcare system, you need to be your own advocate and know what questions to ask.
