T&P please :(

Hey ladies.  I'm not normally one to ask for T&P, but I need some good juju.  I'm not a cryer, and I'm probably overreacting, but today my pregnancy hormones finally caught up with me.

I went in for my gestational diabetes test today (that orange drink wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be) and had my 28 week appointment. My midwife was a little concerned when I told her I'd been feeling a lot of Braxton Hicks contractions, and because I've had a LEEP in the past, she thought I should have my cervix measured on ultrasound.  She was going to have me wait until my 30 week appointment but I had a weird feeling and asked if I could get measured today, so I did.

They like the cervix to measure more than 3cm.  Mine's measuring around 2cm. Not good. (Though my midwife said I must have awesome mother's intuition to think I needed to be checked out right away and not wait.) I have to see a perinatologist tomorrow morning who will remeasure to make sure it's really that short and then determine what I need to do.  I've been put on pelvic rest ("No sperm," said my midwife, looking right at H) and am not supposed to exercise (as if I didn't feel lazy enough already!) The last thing to go would be work and I hope it doesn't come to that because we need my paycheck and I can't use up all my Short Term Disability on bed rest and then not get paid for maternity leave.  And above all, I'm not mentally or physically prepared for the possibility of a preemie.  Baby looked so big and cute on ultrasound, but I know he/she is so, so tiny right now and I'm scared.

Plus, I won't know if I have gestational diabetes until tomorrow.  That'd really be the icing on the cake.

Any good thoughts to send my way for keeping this baby in as long as possible are much appreciated.

    Praying for you, friend.

I had a friend go through this, and all turned out fine-she cooked that baby until 38 weeks. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed you have the same outcome.

Did your friend have to go on bed rest or did they just monitor her cervix for the rest of the pregnancy?  Just curious...trying to learn all I can about this.

  • I'm thinking good thoughts and hoping that the only news you hear from now until the LO comes is good news. Stay strong mama!
  • I'm very sorry to hear that! Lots of t&p to keep that baby cooking! Also, my SIL has been on pelvic rest for a shortened and funneling cervix since 27 weeks- she's been at 1.8 to 1.6 and she's 38w3d today- so this isn't a for sure you're going into labor thing, just take care of yourself and be as calm as you can.

  • Thanks, you guys.

Mary, was your SIL on bed rest or just pelvic rest?  That's really reassuring to know she's under 2cm and made it to 38 weeks!

Just pelvic rest!  She's still up and about, going to work, court (she's an attorney too) and everything.  They actually took a trip to NJ for her shower last weekend.  She went 6 hrs in a car, and back, and was fine.

More than anything I'd just try to get some rest this weekend and stay calm.  You can handle whatever comes your way, and even with just 6 more weeks of incubation your baby is going to be in great shape.   Obviously a preemie isn't optimal, but I have faith that you can handle whatever comes your way.

  • OMG Tara, I'm so sorry about this. How scary! It must be hard to not be freaking out, but try to stay calm and as stress-free as possible. My sister was on bedrest with my oldest nephew (a little later in the pregnancy tho, so that might be apples and oranges) and he turned out just fine.

Do what you need to do to take care of yourself and your baby, first and foremost.

Work and income are important, but in the grand scheme, things work out. Any chance your work would let you work from home? You edit/review brochures and the like, right? That type of work can be done remotely. Talk to your boss and maybe she'll let you do that.

Thinking of you. Please let us know how it goes.

  • I'm so sorry, hun! I would be worrying too. The good thing is that you found out sooner rather than later. I'll be keeping you in my t&p! Please keep us updated!
  • So sorry to hear that. :( My thoughts and prayers are with you!
