Family Birthday Parties

Have I ever vented to you ladies about Greg's family's stupid birthday parties throughout the year?

I swear I must have.

How every single person gets cake and pretzels (and those are the only things served) in the middle of the day, on the weekends. His parents live in the sticks so your entire day is screwed, and the "party" only lasts an hour or so.

Please tell me I've mentioned this before.

  • I feel like you may have...

  • So for instance, this Sunday (my 2nd anniversary) I have to stay close to home, in order to drive to the sticks and have cake (and cake only) at 1:00 in the motherfuckingafternoon for a 41st birthday.

The day is screwed. A total waste.

They also only plan these between 1-3pm because they're too cheap to feed people anything other than cake and chips. They've said to me "well, if we had it around dinner time, everyone would expect a meal"

    Angry

We do this 20+ times a year.

  • Whose birthday is it this weekend?

Is it someone you guys could politely bow out because it's your anniversary?

Tell Greg he owes you a massive foot massage and piece of chocolate cake.

It's his oldest sister. She's 41 years old for christ sake, does she really need to be sung to???

  • You certainly have mentioned having to go...are you saying every person, even adults, has a birthday party? (ETA: I started this post before you had any replies and it took me like 10 minutes to actually hit submit)

We always had birthday parties (with only cake and ice cream) for the kids...and it made sense, because it was just my mom's side, so her and her sister and us six cousins, and we lived maybe 3 miles away from each other. No big deal. Now, we're continuing the tradition, except I live 3 hours away from my mom and sister and my brother lives a half hour away from them. Hence the 3 hr drive to go to my step-nephew's birthday.

  • Lame. Is there anything you guys could do on your way back to celebrate your anniversary? Or is it just the fact that these parties happen all.the.time that bothers you?

I'd almost be inclined to bring YOUR favorite cake (small size of course) and write Happy Anniversary to us on it ;-)

All adults, spouses, kids, cousins....ALL OF THEM. 90% of the above mentioned 20+ annual parties are for adults.

  • Greg's response is that "it's only an hour"

But it's in the middle of the f*cking day!

  • I'm sure you've mentioned it. What a PITA. I like the idea of bringing your own anniversary cake.

    ETA: fixing a typo...

  • You've mentioned it, but not the details of the "parties." I'd be skipping it.
  • That is not what I would want to be doing on my anniversary.... one hour or not! I agree that you should take your own cake :)

  • In my passive aggressive way, I usually bring something to EAT that is not a chip, dip or cake.

I was hoping they'd get my hints. Now they just expect me to bring something.

    FAIL

    Bring a single sandwich.

    Ha!

  • That's insane to have a 41st birthday party.  I understand a kids party, but cake for every family member, come on.

I think on sunday, i would come down with a "cold".

  • Yikes.... I hope y'all can find a way to bail out!

  • I would totally just call his sister and say suck it, but thats just me.

Tell them your tired - uh, hello you are carrying the cutest parasite ever.

This is my opinion about these shenanigans.  She'll live if you guys aren't there.

  • Wow EVERYone gets cake and pretzels? I can see doing this for kids and significant birthdays like 30, 40, etc. But not a 41 year-old. That's just odd to me.
