School Counselors?

Hello! I just discovered this board and I am excited that it exists! I currently work for a non-profit in which I assist college students in locating internships. Through this, I have discovered a passion in helping students figure out career paths and help with road blocks along the way.

I have considered going back for my master's for school counseling. Since I would have to eventually quit my job to do practicum work within a school, I really think it would make sense to just go full-time and try to get a GA position.

Before I make that commitment, I am wondering if there are any school counselors out there that I can speak with about the field.

Thanks!!

Re: School Counselors?

  • Really, really look at the need in your area before you make the switch. In my district they are letting all elementary counselors go because there is no money to fund these positions. I am really hoping this ultimately does not happen because counselors are needed at the elementary level.
  • Perhaps get an MSW... more opportunities, you aren't stuck in a corner.

School social work could be an option. I agree with PP though that the market for school counselors is small, so do your research.

Also look into whether or not your state has a requirement that counselors have classroom experience.

  • I am an elementary counselor. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.  Unfortunately, we are up on the chopping block this year as the district looks at cuts.  So, you have to see what is going on in your area...but, I think eventually the pendulum will swing the other way and we will be brought back if they DO get rid of us.

  • I am going to be a school psychologist (as long as I can find a job) and the benefit over that in my state at least (PA) is that psychologists are mandated while counselors are not. Some of the role is the same but it depends a lot on the district. From how I see it though the psychologist has a lot more paperwork and doesn't get to know any of the general ed students.

  • Thank you everyone for the feedback! I had heard that it is somewhat difficult to get into schools (I live in a Pittsburgh suburb) but I also know that I can work at the university level as well.

Rachel- What program did you go through?? Can you tell me more about what schools are looking for in your experience?

  • I went to school and obtained a dual degree in professional and school counseling.  While I originally wanted the school counseling track, after graduation it was near impossible to find a job in my area.  Our whole graduation class (50 of us) struggled to find jobs. With the over saturation and then the budget cuts, new positions (if any) that were opened were either given to counselors who had 15-20 years experience or teachers that were teaching in the district "waiting" to be ushered into the counseling positions. The vibe is that there are positions out there...but in reality every position that opens up has 500+ applicants. How scary.

Could you look at the vocational schools in the area? I know I did that for 2 years and *loved* it. I loved working with the college students, as a counselor and as a mentor. It was great.  Now I've transitioned into private practice and I primarly work with children and adolescents. I've had a rocky start into the counseling field but I wouldn't change my path. I love what I do.... just wish i had the benefits/consistent pay of being in a school district.
