* Warning * I have a dumb question!

For a few months before the wedding, I took prenatal vitamins.  I figured they would help my hair and nails, and they really really did.  I just took the generic Target brand ones, because they were cheap.

Anyway, would it be bad to start taking them again, and possibly be on them for a long period of time?  They just helped my nails so much, and I miss having such strong nails.  Keith and I aren't planning on trying for kids for a year or two yet, so is it a bad thing to be on them for that long?

Re: * Warning * I have a dumb question!

  • (Ooo, great question!  I've actually been thinking about doing the same thing becase recently my nails are really "peely" and I'm also trying to grow my hair out and wondering if that'd help.)
  • They say you're supposed to be on them for about a year before you start trying....so i dont see anything wrong with being on them even if you're not gonna try....

beware tho...i read something either on getting pregnant or baby not on the brain yesterday where it makes....ALL your hair grow more....LOL

  • I take prenatals because they are easier to digest than regular vitamins (I could also take children's vitamins) and I have chronic gastritis, so my doc actually recommended them. There is nothing wrong with taking them permanently.

And my nails have been the strongest they have ever been since I started taking prenatals about 2 years ago. (my nails have always been very weak and pealing) And my hair has always grown super fast, so I have nto really noticed a difference in that area.

  • Thanks for the info ladies.  I figured it was ok, but I am like so uninformed about crap like that, that it's good to hear from others.

My nails have always been pretty strong, but lately, like Hannah's, they are peeling.  And I just got my new green nail polish in the mail last night, and it made me think that I'd like to start taking the vitamins again.  lol

You already got your Zoya polish?? I hope to get mine this weekend... last time they had a special, it took 2 months because they had so many people order. Maybe that's why they put a limit on it this time... I better get them before St. Patty's!!

  • Yep!  Mine came yesterday!  You can call them and they'll tell you when they are supposed to ship.  I called on Monday because it seemed like it had been FOREVER and I still hadn't gotten a shipping confirmation email.  lmao  I got off the phone and the girl who works for me was like, "You just ordered those on Friday."  LMAO  It seemed like it had been way longer than that.

  • I've been taking them for about 2 years now, on and off.  When I was just at the gyno the other day he told me that the over-the-counters are great multivitamins for women of child bearing age.  He mentioned that taking them up to a year before conception was actually best, if you could plan that far in advance.  He also said that switch to prescription prenatals at 3 months prior to conception would be ideal as well, something about the actual percentages of the most important vitamins inside them.

The hair and nail thing is just a perk.  I've always had strong nails but now they grow real quick.  I've always had relatively fine hair and it used to take foreverrr to grow.  Now my hair is thicker (not wildly, but noticeably to me) and shinier.  It also grows much quicker.  **Please note as PP mentioned - this does in fact include ALL hair.  Dude.  I'm Italian with black hair to begin with....!

Anyway, it's worth it to get the good stuff in your system.

  • Like PP have said, I don't think there's anything wrong with it, and yes, they recommend you begin taking them at least a year before you plan to get pregnant.

If you're concerned, though, or don't want to spend so much (I know mine are really expensive, but they're easy on my stomach so I deal with it!), you could just take a regular multivitamin and Biotin.  That's what makes your hair and nails stronger.

  • The Target brand ones are really pretty cheap and you get a crap-ton of them in a bottle, so they last for a few months.  (I only took 1 per day)  so the price wasn't an issue.  And I didn't find these particular ones to taste bad or have any "gastro" side effects.  :-)

Interesting!  My OB was totally fine with me staying on the ones I was on before (plus, I take a prenatal DHA supplement).

Hmm.. maybe because I'm only taking a cheap ShopRite store brand?  I have no idea.
