Aldi

Yay or nay?

I have never been there and have been debating trying it out. I believe the closet one to my house is the one off of White Bear Ave in Saint Paul.

Re: Aldi

  • Yay.  Aldi's regular prices are lower than Cub and Rainbow.  However their selection is extremely limited (at least the one in Sun Ray, I haven't been to other Aldi's yet)

this. I've only been to the Rice St one, but we liked what we did get. I don't do meat or produce there though, partially because we mostly get those from costco, and partially because it always looks like it's ready to go bad.

  • Yay, recently starting going there. You can't get your whole list and have to watch some prices but most things are very good price.

  • Yay.  But like PP mention, you likely won't be able to get everything on your list there.  But what you do get there will be less expensive than most other places - especially canned stuff. I went last weekend and got 5 bags worth of stuff for $77, then went to Rainbow for the rest and spent like $45 for 2 bags worth.  Just about everything is an off-brand, although there are a few brand name items there (like M&Ms)  Also, be aware that they don't provide bags...so either bring your own, or you'll be paying for them.    They do not accept credit cards, but will accept debits and of course cash.  Finally, I was totally confused by the cart situation the first time I went.  They carts are outside, you stick a quarter in the handle to use one, but you do get the quarter back when you return the cart to the corral.

  • We went once.  I'm too much of a food snob to go back.  If you have to make a trip to another store to finish your shopping, it's not worth it.  I'm a sale shopper/coupon clipper, and that saves me enough money.

Agreed...except I'm not really a food snob, I just don't like going to more than one place for anything...gas is too expensive to waste my time driving all over the planet for food.  I go to the local grocery store and if they don't have something I don't get it or just come up with something else.

This. I just don't have the time or energy to chase all over the city for grocery's. And honestly, some things are okay in off-brand and some things just are not. We are at a point in our lives where if I have to pay a little more for the good stuff, I will. I want to enjoy the little bit I can actually eat these days.

This exactly.  And with two kids having to have to walk through the entire parking lot to get a cart doesn't really work for me.  I get better deals elsewhere.

  • I like Aldi.  I probably go once every six weeks or two months, so it isn't that onerous to me.  I buy my coffee there, because it is much cheaper than elsewhere, and it is good.  And I like to stock up on things like feta cheese, which are delicious and priced very well.  It isn't that much work for me, and when I go and stock up, it is worth my time and effort for the savings.
  • It's the closest grocery store to my house, but I only go there rarely.

I don't have a problem buying generic or off-brand products, because I often buy store brand items at Cub or Target. My main complaint about Aldi is the lack of selection.

I don't buy produce at Aldi, it just never looks good.

I've found that if you clip coupons and plan your shopping around the weekly sales, you can do just about as well price wise at Cub or SuperTarget.

I bring reusable shopping bags no matter where I shop, so it doesn't bug me that Aldi charges for bags.

Oh ... and even though you can supposedly use debit cards there, my TCF debit card does not work at Aldi, so I can only pay with cash. Annoying. (I've never had a problem using the TCF debit card anywhere else, so I don't think it's a problem with the card, I think it's just not accepted at Aldi)
