In the great (cough) state of IL, there is a bill that is currently circulating that would allow breed specific legislation. Basically, this would mean that individual counties and cities would be allowed to be seized and killed based on appearance alone. This means that dogs like mine --a sweet, rescue puppy who is a possible Pit Bull mix-- as well as German Shepherds, Mastiffs, Dobermans, and other breeds would be able to be taken from their owners and killed simply because a group of people have decided that their appearance looks like that of a stereotypically vicious dog (which is a whole other matter).
PLEASE, ladies, sign this petition to stop the breed specific legislation bill from being passed in IL!!
You can find more about IL HB 1080 if you google it online, but it is just awful.

Thank you! If it's my link that's faulty, you can go to www.change.org and search for the bill and it'll come up. Every person who signs the petition gets one more email or letter sent to IL state reps, too, so hopefully it really does help. I got an email confirmation from Bill Brady's office today that they received the email about opposition to the bill.
This bill is bad on so many levels! Lets talk about masking a problem instead of solving dog abuse/ fighting/ poor training/ over breeding......ect.!
I also have a rescue puppy. His dominat breed is Chow Chow (on the "dangerous" breed list). But he is the most docile, tollerant dog I've ever owned. But we have trained him on how to play nicely with other dogs, kids, and people. Ugg, bad dog owners strick a cord with me!
I am happy to sign this petition! I'd be up in arms if Oregon tried to do this. Not to metion the fact that it would cost 17 MILLION DOLLARS to enfores
I don't know how IL economy is doing but if its anything like the rest of the country the government does not have an extra 17,000,000 to spend!
Haha, yeah, the IL economy is very bad right now. There are so many other things that this time and money should be spent on. I totally agree with you that it's not the dogs that are the problem; it's the PEOPLE raising the dogs.
Zeke (our rescue puppy) is honestly the sweetest and most friendly dog I've owned, and he was abused and hit by a car before we adopted him. I'm amazed at how friendly he is after all that happened to him, and it's so obvious that he is grateful to finally have a loving home. After having Zeke, I would adopt another Pit Bull in a heartbeat; we aren't 100% positive that he's full Pit, but it's most certainly in him. All of the Pit Bulls at the rescue he came from are just the sweetest, and ALL came from abusive backgrounds. A dog's appearance alone does not make it aggressive. The idea that this bill is on the table in my state makes me sick to my stomach. And knowing that similar bills have passed in other states makes me even more upset.
@ Erin - Chow Chow is considered agressive? That's ridiculous. Don't they have too much fur to be able to move?
A few years ago, DH was fixing a house he owned and a little (maybe 4 month old) pit bull came by the house, laid down and would not move. Not for two days. DH fed him and gave him water. The dog growled at him whenever he got too close, but would not move. FInally on the third day, he got up and, wagging his tail came over to DH and licked his hand. DH asked around the neighborhood and found out that the dog was literally kicked out by this one family at the other end of the community, because they could not get rid of him. They had six pups and all but this one were taken. RIDICULOUS. If anything someone should control home breeding of any dogs, because that's where the rescue pups come from.
We went to Home Depot and happened to tell this story to a cashier, who said that her pit bull died a few months ago and she was ready to have a new one. She took him from us and texted us pictures for a while.

Chow Chow's were bread to be gaurd dogs in China ( they were also eaten, but thats a whole other story!) They are very territorial and bond closely with there pack. They are number 7 on the top 10 most dangerous dogs list. Ru is by no means a full chow (we call him our Heinze 57) but I full believe that if we were in a dangerous situation or someone broke into our house he would protect us. With that said we took a ton of time to train him properly and socailize him with dogs, kids, and other people. So he is very friendly and would let you do almost anything to him if he trusts you.
And with the not being able to move, Ru also has Ausie in him so he loves to run, play and heard the vacuum
That's really interesting. I did not know any of this about this breed. They always looked like puffy overgrown teddy bear. Do you keep his fur long or do you shave him?
My Blog
They deff. look like over grown teddy bears! Ru doesn't have the full Chow fluff. But in the winter he gets the chow chow main and gets pretty fluffy and needs groomed quite a bit. But in the summer he loses a ton of hair . We're thinking about shaving him this summer but I'm not sure yet.
I'd post a better picture of him for you but my computer is all packed away and DH doesn't have any on his
The picture in my siggy is of him running through my parents property.
