New (used) Car POLL

Do you know anything about any of these cars? We must buy used, new just isnt an option for us right now and all the cars have around 80,000 miles. Ive read consumer reviews but I just wanted to know what you girls thought. The payments are dependant on the dealer/credit/what they give us on a trade. TIA for your input!

Re: New (used) Car POLL

  • I went with the Hyundai. They have a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on them. So I would check to see if the warranty conveys to a new owner. I personally would stay away from the Oldsmobile and Pontiac. They dont make Oldsmobile anymore so I'd be worried about maintenance on it. I've never liked Pontiac so I am just biased on that one.

You dont have a Toyota option? I know they have recently gotten a bad  from all of the recalls but I really do believe they run for ever. I loved loved loved my Toyota Paseo.

  • An Alero was my dream car when I was in high school.

The advice I was given by my step-dad is that since the line has been discontinued parts will get to be harder and harder to come by for repairs.

    No other advice, sorry.

Funny I really liked them in high school too.

Yeah, I had my car all picked out.  A 4-door dark blue with sun roof.  When I was a freshman in college a friend was selling hers, but I couldn't convince my dad to give me $7000 to buy it.  Stick out tongue

  • I also vote Hyundai. They seem to be the best brand up there plus their warranty is great. Elantras are nice little cars and are not expensive to fix. The others are not worth your money, IMO.

  • Unless you can find a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Then I'd go with the Elantra.

  • I chose the 2005 Elantra because we have a 2005 Elantra.  We have had it for almost 5 years and have little to know issues with it.  It's H's car and he went to that from a grand am which he never had any issues with either it was just much older than your option.  I do agree with PP on the toyota.  The company car I was just driving had 188000 miles on it and it was a 99 camry.  Fantastic car had no issues at all even with that many miles on it.  My boss actullay bought it for his daughter's high school car so I imagine it get's well above 200,000 before it is done.  GL with your car hunt!

  • Of those choices, yeah go with the Elantra.

Unless you can find a Corolla or Camry or Civic.  You'd have to settle for an older model for the same price as the 2005s that you're looking at, but you'd have a more reliable car - and better gas millage.

No one has mentioned Fords, but J and I have both always had very good luck with Fords.  Our cars have all been used, but reliable, good gas millage and generally just good cars for the money we've paid.  If you are looking for a cheap commuter car that's easy on gas, I rec. a Focus.  J has a 2001 Focus that he uses only to get to and from work - it has saved us quite a bit on gas and it's seriously all he needs.  Any trips we take together/as a family/grocery shopping/whatever else is done in my car.  FWIW, J spent 2k on his '01 Focus a few months ago and it has less than 70k miles on it and is in perfect shape - and that was the going rate for all of them around here... it's always an option to go cheapo for a while.
  • I've heard bad things about the Alero and Grand Am's.  I chose Sebring but think the Hyundai would be good too
