spring cleaning weekend: things I found in my return air duct.

A package of twist-ties

three little girl hair clips

a polished tiger's eye stone

a Walgreens receipt from 1994

a piece of mail addressed to a Mrs Alberta C. from the fraternal order of police, dated 1993

an orange-yellow crayon

a pin from an airline that's been out of business for at least 15 years

a link from a baby teething chain

a tube of diaper rash cream

a little girl's red plastic bracelet

an earring

a baby sock

moral of the story: I think I'm going to hire a professional duct cleaner for the rest of them, this is gross...

  • Wow, that is a crazy list of odd things to find in your ducts...I'm scared to look in mine!!

Cut it out!! I'm afraid to look in mine now too! Tongue Tied
  • Disgusting what was found, but awesome that you are doing this. Can you tell me how you are tackling this, or at least the one you did yourself?
  • we have two return air vents in the house, and both are in the floor. On if about 1 ft x 1 ft and one is 2.5 ft x 1 ft. I just removed the grates and used the shop vac in there to get as far as I could. My shop vac has two extenders for the nozzle. I set them down into the duct and then attached them to the hose, since the whole thing wouldn't fit in if it were assembled already. Both ducts extended horizontally underneath the floor, so I was able to vacuum about 4-5  feet inside each one.

I did end up cleaning the second one even though I swore I wouldn't, and all I found was a receipt and a bottlecap.... whew.

  • We found dog treats (??), several pieces of baseboard trim (we didn't install it so it's at least 6 years old!!), and lots of dust bunnies.  We are hiring someone to finish the job as well.
