Internet/Phone question

The Mr. and I are considering dropping our cable and internet services.  Have any of you just used your phones to access the internet on your computer, i.e using hot spots or connecting directly from your phone to computer?  We currently have new Android phones.

Re: Internet/Phone question

  • I want to do the same thing.  My DH is the holdout on getting rid of our landline.  We've never had cable, but I recently got a Roku and that's working well for streaming Netflix, Pandora, Hulu.

We have android phones and there is a way to "tether" your phone so it acts as a modum to your computer (but then I'm not sure how I'd stream to my Roku??).  Anyway the site I used to do a tether trial was junefabrics.com (I think) and there is another app called Easy Tether.  My phone is 4G and it seemed to work well enough.  I have unlimited data through Sprint on my cell phone, but I do way too many things on the computer to give up internet or have a solid tether solution.

  • The connection is usually a bit slower when you're using the phone as a hot-spot. But if you're not doing a lot of streaming/downloading, it's not a big issue.

H and I just canceled cable but kept the high-speed internet so we could still easily stream Netflix and Hulu through the PS3 and Blu-ray player.
