You know how they say that we love our pets like children, and hurt when they hurt... Our puppy just served us a super stressful Sunday/Monday...
He ate something outside on Saturday afternoon, that bothered his stomach. Then, he woke up at night on Sunday, went to the door, and started chewing on the little door rug with the rubber under-lining that we have there. The rug was about 4 feet wide, and he chewed away the edging, as well as some 2 inches of the width. It was all made of that rubber and interwoven strings of the thread. He threw up most of the edging the same morning. Felt OK most of the Sunday till midnight, when he started throwing up the rest of the strings. Throughout the night we were able to pull out two long strings, but in the morning he was still sick, and nothing was falling out anymore. We took him to the doctor at 11:30 and she took an x-ray. His whole stomach was full, but since he has not eaten any food, it meant that it was all the rug. She induced more vomiting, but nothing fell out so she decided to put him under and get it out through a surgery. She was worried that the string would start passing through, but with a part of it still caught up in the stomach, it could have cut his intestines.
He looked so so sad when we were leaving, I started crying. And she was like, it?s totally normal, we cut open at least one dog a day after they eat something? It?s just crazy. And Joe keeps blaming himself because we used to have a normal door mat with those brittle threads that are all natural. He would pull on those when he was sick, and would never get more than an inch at a time. Joe just changed that mat to the rug and one of the strings we pulled out was like 7 feet long.
We left him there at 2pm and at 8pm they finally called us and said that they finished the surgery some 30 minutes ago and he was slowly coming around. She said that she was shocked how much rug there way. He ate more than the size of his head. She was happy that she made a decision to open him, instead of scoping, which she very briefly considered. I hoped we would get him back tonight, but he is already 9 years old and she said she will keep him for observation for at least 24 hours, possibly more...
I am so relieved that everything went well with the surgery, but she told me that due to the fact that a lot of the smaller plastic pieces started passing through, we still have to be careful about how we set our hopes for the recovery...
I can't describe how I felt the whole day. I felt like my baby was dying. Dark thoughts, horrible, I just can't believe it. Never went through anything like this before. Sorry for a long post... I still can't believe this happened to our poor beagle.

Thank you again, ladies. Ozzy is back at home, looking very sad, but that's probably because he is sore all over his belly. He looks so cute. So happy to have him back.
I took this picture when we got back home. He went straight to him blanket and tucked himself in
