BR: maternity clothes

Ok, I need some help ladies. At 8 weeks, I am NOT fitting into my pants!!! I feel like this doesn't happen to most people! Lol. I usually wear skirts and dress pants to work and at this point I have maybe 3-4 skirts that still fit (for now), but no pants.

What the heck did you do around this point in your pregnancy? I feel like I'm still too small to justify real maternity pants, but at the same time, I don't want to just buy a size up in regular clothing because it probably won't fit me for very long.

Another thing is that I won't be working through my entire pregnancy (probably only up until 6 mos), so I don't really want to invest in a bunch of stuff I'll never have a use for again.

I have a belly band from Target, but that doesn't work with most of my pants either, because I can't zip them!

Helpppp:(

Should I just buy maternity pants now and hold them up with the belly band??? Any other ideas?!

  • Just go ahead and get a couple pairs of maternity pants. You will feel SO much better. I never realized how uncomfortable I was until I actually went out and bought a pair of over-the-belly maternity pants. (The under-the-belly ones were always super uncomfortable to me because Ellie liked to hang out really low.) Anyway, just bite the bullet, sister. If you don't want to get work stuff, just get khakis or something that you will be able to wear later on, when you're no longer working. Although, my favorite pair that I had was a pair of black pinstriped dress pants from Motherhood. So comfy!
  • I did get a few pairs of maternity pants and used the bella band- I didnt zip my pants, just tried to wear it low enough and have a longer shirt. I also wore a ton of dresses early on so it hid it better.

If you are going to purchase items... gap is a great place (or so I have found). On wednesdays they do 40% off in stores on one item I usually went in for larger items (pants or dresses) on these days. I was also at Motherhood this weekend and they have VERY cute spring stuff.

  • Hmm maybe I will just get some maternity pants and skirts. I'd rather put my money into those...at least I know they'll fit me for a while. I guess I have to get some longer shirts too. That's half the reason I'm having trouble with the belly band...my shirts aren't long enough to hide it.

I think I might try Gap sometime this week. I was actually in Motherhood and Pea in the Pod yesterday...I wasn't impressed but maybe I'll just try another location.

  • Try online too, once you figure out what size you need. I had more luck with Gap online than in store. Also, I belive Ann Taylor has an online maternity line. JCPenney also has a pretty good selection online. The store selection is lacking, though.

    Good luck!
  • I was in Mat Pants by 8 weeks too! I also wore A LOT of pre-preg dresses I had, but the weather was warm then.

Pants with the low-rise or roll panel might actually work for you now without the be-band/bella band.

FWIW, I actually prefer the low-rise maternity pants, but most women tend to like the full panel. You'll want to use the be-band for the full panel.

  • I used the be-band. Even when I couldn't zip. I did just buy some less form fitting non-maternity shirts the next size up and went and got a bunch of longer tanks to cover the band. I figure I will still wear them even after bc I know I won't be right back into my small shirts. I have also been able to wear the regular shirts I bought right away all the way through. I too preferred the small panel, not the full. Bc I always wear a tank under my shirt, the full felt like I was exposed or something lol idk. I had a hard time in mat pants too bc everywhere else was huge and the extra fabric chafed my legs.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Thanks for the tips everyone:) I will definitely look into your suggestions!
  • Rach, I highly recommend the hair tie trick for jeans and other pants that have buttons.  (Thanks to Christina for introducing me to that.)  Just loop a hair tie through the button hole and then around the button.  Instant breathing room.  That held me until about 14 weeks on my jeans.

As for pants, the point of the Bella Band is NOT to zip your pants underneath.  I wore a lot of my work pants completely unzipped and unbuttoned and just put the Bella over it.  (Folding the band in half will help hide any bumps from your unzipped zippers.) It's okay if your band shows, it just looks like you're wearing a camisole underneath your top.  They also make Bella Bands with lace edging, so it looks even more like a cami.  I had some trouble with the bands staying in place, but it was better than nothing.  I didn't buy any pants in a bigger non maternity size -- I just wore all my pre-preg pants until the Bella band got uncomfortable and I went to maternity pants around 15 weeks.

As for maternity wear, I prefer the half/demi panel pants in general.  When you're early in pregnancy, the full panels won't stay up very well and your pants/jeans will sag in the crotch a little.  You can fold the full panel in half to help, but I haven't been able to keep a full panel pair of pants or jeans up until just this past week at 28 weeks.  My half panel Gap jeans do feel a little tight in the waist though at this point, so I've been wearing my full panels more often.

You are pretty tiny through the hips like I am, so I don't know if you'll have good luck with Old Navy.  You can try them but I couldn't wear any of their pants and still can't.  I've had great luck with Gap jeans and dress pants and their 40% sales though.  The fit is MUCH more like "real" non-maternity jeans.  I've bought some basic tees and turtlenecks there as well but I actually really love Target.  I lived in Liz Lange Maternity sweaters from Target all winter and now I've been wearing some cute ruched short-sleeve t-shirts with a lot of my pre-preg long cardigans.

Motherhood isn't bad for some things -- cheap, cute dresses and tops but a lot of their sizing doesn't fit me quite the way I'd like. I think A Pea In The Pod is overpriced for what it is.

Either way, invest in lots of tanks and tees.  You will become a FURNACE over the next few months...I'm always cold, but in the last 4 weeks, I've been a sweat machine and it's only getting worse. :)

  • Thanks Tara!! That helps a lot!

I guess I just feel weird and kinda naked if I have my pants all unzipped being held up by a band! Lol. I think long shirts are key though. I definitely need some of those.

I felt so silly being in Motherhood and Pea in the Pod this weekend. I thought people must be looking at me like WTF?

I might look into some half panel pants at Gap. Hopefully it will get really warm soon and I can just wear dresses and be done with it!

  • Ditto everyone else.

I can still wear my pre-preg jeans and pants. I swear one day I'm going to pop and be enormous. I have a bella band and use it on the days where I'm very bloated and the hair tie trick works too. My shirts are getting shorter though and that's a real pain in the ass.

A mom friend of mine suggested I buy the size I am now in mat. stuff and consider buying a few things one size up for the end when nothing fits right or covers the baby belly. Dresses are going to be a huge staple of mine this summer. Gauchos and yoga capris too, fashion be damned!

  • Ditto what everyone else said but I'd like to add if you can find the pants that have the elastic band with buttons on the inside, I found these to be the best and most comfortable because you can adjust them.  Plus then you can use them for the whole pregnancy because you can tighten them way up now and then loosen them later.  They're ingenious!  I know I found a couple pairs at the Motherhood store.
