Cleaning out closet

What is your rule of thumb when deciding what clothes/shoes/purses to throw away/donate/keep?

I have so many clothes, but only wear a small percentage.  The others just sit there because I think one day I may wear them again, but I usually never do.  I need some help!

Re: Cleaning out closet

  • Ask yourself WHY you don't wear it/them.  Are they too formal, maybe keep 1 for a wedding.  Do you feel good wearing them, if you don't feel good in them toss them.  Are they the wrong size, are you actively working on getting to that size.  I think the first step is deciding why you're choosing to wear other things.
  • I use the reverse hanger trick for clothes.  When I wear something I hang it up the opposite of the clothes I haven't worn.  Then at the end of the year or season the clothes I haven't worn are off to Salvation Army.  A friend of mine has done this for years and got me doing it.  With shoes and bags I go by their condition.  If they are worn and have obvioiusly seen better days then I get rid of them.

  • If you havent worn it in a year, donate it.

I've thought about the reverse hanger trick, but really the clothes I don't wear end up against the wall in my closet.  I go through the far end of clothes once in a while and donate the ones on the end.

Then go with that and call it the clothes against the wall method.  Big Smile  This way could definitely work considering it's the clothes you don't wear.  Give them one last look through then donate them.

  • I have found that in any given time about 80% of my clothes are hardly ever worn.  I've done a few big clean outs - mostly going by what I haven't worn in awhile and what I do/don't feel good in.  There are so many cute things that there is no reason to take up valuable closet space with clothes you don't feel good in.

I have a few "skinny clothes" that I've kept - but only because I'm actively trying to get to that size and they are really good quality or my favorites.  I figure that once I hit that goal size - I'm going to want to buy new clothes to reward myself.

For shoes and purses I go with how they are looking - or if I have something else that fits the same purpose.  For example - I had two dusty pink purses.  I rarely have occassion for one pink purse, let alone two.  So I kept my favorite one and donated the other.  For shoes - I've gone with comfort - if they are just cute but horribly uncomfortable - they went.

I find that I have an easier time getting rid of stuff because I donate them to the SPCA thrift store - so everythign I donate goes to help the animals.  That makes me more inclined to part with things that I like but don't really love or need.

  • Like some of the pp, if you haven't worn it in a year, then it's time to let it go.  I really try to go by that and clean out my closet a few times a year.  I usually don't take out everything I haven't worn in a year, but I try.  It keeps the closet from overflowing.  But I love the idea of the pp who donates to the SPCA thrift store.  I din't know they had that so I'll make sure to use that as my motivation next time.

  • I put all the clothes I think I want to donate in a box and stick the box someplace out of mind.  (Not too far out of mind that you forget where it is.)  I usually put the donate box in our guest room.  Then, later on, if I can't remember what I put in the box, I donate it.

I also limit the number hangers I have in my closet.  So, if I buy something new, something else has to go into "the box."

    HTH!
