Japan donations?

What are your thoughts on donating to the Japan fund? Do you generally donate to international crises?

I think it's great that people around the world want to help, but I'm not planning on it. I prefer to keep my donations semi-local. I think with the publicity and massive fundraising efforts surrounding major natural disasters, plenty of people donate money who don't otherwise donate to charities, but some people probably divert their money from their usual charities to give to the latest disaster.

Re: Japan donations?

  • I never donate to international causes, but instead focus on giving donations to local charities or organizations where people here can actually benefit directly from my donation.

I might be totally flammable for that, but it's what I do.

  • I don't think donating to any charity is flammable...whether you choose local or international support. What I would find flammable is if someone said they didn't give a crap about the earthquake and tsunami victims...like that crazy b!tch from the bump 9-12 board.

  • We donated significantly to Haiti, and I imagine we will also use this month's donation budget on helping Japan. I like the water straws that filter--they're $10 per straw and that would be something that my seemingly small amount of money could be used to make a large impact.

    I agree with this completely.

We did make a small donation to the Red Cross for earthquake/tsunami victims.  Honestly, in situations like these I think there is a psychological benefit for some to giving to help with these disasters. The images I keep seeing from Japan are so horrible - for me, it does a bit to ease that feeling of helplessness in the face of these kinds of events to feel like I am doing whatever small thing I can do to make a difference in the aftermath.

I agree.  And I'm interested in this 9-12 lady...
