Anyone have a veggie garden?

I want to do a small raised bed or two this year (well, wanted to last year as well but was lazy!)  I am clueless as to what I should plant & when.  DH looked through a Burpee catalog & circled everything he wants-if it was up to him we'd have enough peppers & beans to feed our entire street for the summer!  I'm 99% sure I'm the one who will be doing all of the gardening so I'll be planting a little bit of the things I know we'll like & eat.  Are there any websites, guides, even blogs that are fairly specific to our area?  Does anyone here have a garden?  What works for you?

Re: Anyone have a veggie garden?

  • We will be getting the garden area ready this week- tilling the dirt and getting rid of grass or weeds that grew.

In april/may we buy the veggie plants we like (we have tried starting from seed before, but it didnt work for us).  Last year, we planted tomatoes (cherry, beefsteak, roma), jalapenos, green bell peppers, pickling cucumbers and sage.  Everything did very well except for the tomatoes :(  In previous years tomatoes have always done great, but last year they looked diseased.

This year we are expanding!  On our list:  Tomatoes (just beefsteak this year), jalapenos, bell peppers, leaf lettuce, radishes, onions, garlic, cabbage, rhubarb, strawberries, and sage (comes back every year and grows larger and larger in a bush- it also helps to deter some animals).

We havent yet decided if we want to do cucumbers again this year (they are viney and get a little out of hand).  And I kind of want to try zucchini.

Have you checked on the gardening board, they can point you in the right direction for guides and websites to help you get started.  We just wing it :)  HTH!

  • I listen to this guy on the radio - he's local and very helpful, so you might find some helpful things there: http://www.dennysguide.com/

The what and where you plant depend a lot on what your growing conditions are like. We have HEAVY Southern exposure all day long on our yard - we've had tomatoes, hot peppers, and yellow squash go crazy - along with herbs - particularly rosemary, oregano and chives - but the sage, mint and thyme hung on for a long ride.

  • I like the square foot gardening method. I got a book on it at the library last spring.

Do you can them?  I bought one of those mini ball canning kits last year & made 3 jars of apple butter.  My dad gave me my grandma's old canning stuff last fall-her huge pot is useable but some of the jars were the old blue ones.  Really pretty but I know not to use those for canning anymore.

And thanks for all the resources!  Forgot about Denny, my dad used to listen to him all the time.  I saw a 4x4 raised kit at Sam's that I'm probably going to buy.  I know I could make something cheaper out of untreated lumber but it's made of that plastic deck lumber so it should last for many years.  We have a tiny city lot so the neighbor's houses are very close to us, our yard is wooded, and our detached garage shades the yard.  Our sunniest area faces north (house on the south side of us is 3 feet away so no sun).  I think a small bed or two makes the most sense while we figure out our sun & what grows, otherwise we'll waste money on the plants.  I tried starting a few from seeds last year with a little indoor greenhoue kit.  What a fail-they sprouted, some dried up & others turned moldy!  I so do not have a green thumb :-(

  • I started canning last summer.  I made vanilla peach jam, apple butter and chow.  Let me know if you want the recipes, I can find them for you.  I hope to can more things this summer.

Have you ever made fridge pickles?  So easy and SO good!

Oh, and definitely keep the blue canning jars!  If you see a number 13 stamped on the bottom of one of them, they are SUPER rare and worth a lot of money, bc people back then would smash those bc of the unlucky number.

I already had a bunch of the blue ones, even displayed them in my kitchen.  I packed them up to declutter but I still have them!  DIdn't know about the "13" jars either.  My FIL has a ton of the blue jars but he won't give them up-I should sneak in his basement and check his!

I make pickeled cukes during the summer with vinegar, green onions, sugar, salt, & pepper.   Never actual pickles though.

  • I do!  I grew heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, peas, and beans last year.

If you're against GMO food (burpee buys seed from Monsanto), I'd recommend looking at seedsavers.org (or another heirloom seed provider) instead.
