For those who sub... (or used to)
What are your fav things to take with you when you go sub? (be it books, special games, organier thingy... sanity
)
It's been a while and slowly getting back into that world... Thanks!
Re: For those who sub... (or used to)
I usually always bring books...especially when I sub for younger grades.
My first year I did a ticket raffle at the end of the day. I would call tickets to get prizes, they would get a ticket for good behavior. I have not done that this year and do not plan on doing it again. I'd like to think my management skills have improved since my first year.
Really that is it...I used to bring tons of games and books but I find I don't need them much anymore. For younger grades you can always play simon says if you need a filler. For older grades, I have them do independent reading, write, or draw if i have 5 or 10 minutes to kill.
Oh and bring business cards! I get a ton of repeat teachers because I leave business cards with my info. I also print out my own sub notes sheets to leave for the teacher (absences, behavior problems, work we did/did not get to, helpful students, etc.)
And make sure you have a monthly planner so you can keep track of jobs!
Good luck!
I subbed for a few years. I always had a few good picture books in my bag. I always left my business card attached to a magnet and then I also passed out my cards with the neighbor teachers who introduced themselves or that I talked to during the day. I usually went into their room to thank them and then gave them a card.
Be sure to leave the room clean! I've gone into coworkers rooms after the subs have left and they leave messes or don't tidy up or have the kids tidy up before leaving. Leave thorough notes about what went well or not or if you notice kids who were struggling or were stinkers. Those who were stinkers usually won't surprise the teacher, but that way they know what to follow up on.
Good luck!
i know this isn't what you asked for, but i just wanted to second this. i am a complete neat freak, and i realize this, but i am appalled sometimes when i come back from a day out of school and i see what my sub has left me. hell-O? do you SEE the rest of the room? do you SEE that i have my cabinets labeled with label maker tape? did you notice how neatly i left the stuff for you on my desk? then why do you think it's okay for you to leave a complete mess on it for me to come back to, including your dirty coffee mug? (this has happened more than once.) ugh.
I'm in my second year of subbing and I try to be extra super prepared for everything:
1) Small smiley stickers to put on students hands when staying on task (mainly for the younger grades)
2) A mind benders book that has last minute games and things for grades K-12. The older grades that can multiple and divide quickly love the math problems that lead them back to the same number.
3) A koosh ball for silent ball and answering classroom questions
4) Reading Books for the younger groups
5) Extra pens, pencils, paper clips, rubber bands, etc
I'm looking for a fulltime job but I do love subbing- the kids are great and I'm able to try different classroom management ideas and check out what other teachers are doing! Good luck and enjoy it!
