I've been meaning to ask you ladies this question, and since it came up this AM, it reminded me. Here's my predicament re: hiring and non-disclosure.
Obviously, you ladies know that DH is military. When we moved here, I was 6 months preggo, and had every intention of staying home with the kids (decision we made before we even got married). However, I've also struggled with being at home with them and feeling like I'm not putting forth any help financially to the household, and that I'm just wasting my brain (that's a story for another day). I've glanced at a few job listings, and have found 2-3 that would actually fit my degree, but I've hesitated to apply.
I graduated in December 2006 with a BS in Food Science, minor in Business. We moved to Italy in Feb 2007. There weren't any real job opportunities for spouses to work at our location, so I stayed at home there. Other than selling Pampered Chef, and studying for Financial Advisor certification (just working on my hours now), I've had no real work experience, much less in my industry.
I've always wondered how to explain the "gap" on my resume. I can state that I'm a military spouse and we were stationed overseas, but that can be looked down on because of the frequent moves. I can say that I was staying home with my boys, but that's opening myself up to the family/children questions. Given that this kind of info is illegal to ask, and not required to be disclosed, how does one go about handling it? Am I essentially forced to give personal info because of a (valid) question about my resume? Also, am I worrying about nothing?
Re: S/O HR and hiring disclosure
I would offer the information that you stayed at home with kids but that you are ready to be in the workforce and start your career now. It is so common, I don't think they would hold it against you.
I agree with Brittjoy on how to answer the question. It's best to be honest.
Can I ask what FA cert you're working on?
Thanks ladies, I hadn't thought of that.
It's the Certified Financial Counselor designation through the AFCPE (Assoc for Financial Counseling and Planning Education) and FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). It's a mouthful!
"My 101 List - Updating asap, I swear!
Good luck!
I agree with this.
