*Mommas* (looking for book recs)

I'm looking for books on pregnancy, birth, babies.  I want to start educating myself more in this area.  Any recs on books you really enjoyed and found informative?  I saw the long list on the link at the top of the GP board.  I got a bit overwhelmed with it b/c there are so many listed.

  • For before getting PG: Taking Charge of Your Fertility

This pregnancy I have been reading:
    -Your pregnancy week by week

-Your Best Birth: Know All Your Options, Discover the Natural Choices, and Take Back the Birth Experience by Ricki Lake, Abby Epstein & Jacques Moritz

    - HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method: A natural approach to a safe, easier, more comfortable birthing by Marie Mongan

  • Definitely agree with TCOYF for getting pregnant. I've been reading Your Pregnancy Week by Week. I like it, but it doesn't give a whole lot of information each week. If you're looking for something that will make you crack up (but please don't actually follow any of the advice in it), I just started reading "Let's Panic About Babies." SO funny!

  • Thanks ladies.  I have read TCOYF.  I have 3 friends TTC this year and I keep trying to get them to read it.  One thinks she's going to get pg as soon as they start trying in July.  She doesn't plan to come off the pill until July...so thus, beginning their "trying."  I said you should probably go ahead and come off it to let your body adjust and use alternate methods in the meantime.  They actually have a trip planned as a kick-off.  And I told her, when I came off, I started my period almost immediately and it lasted longer than normal....(not exactly how I'd want to spend a "baby-making" vacation!)  And she just looked at me like I was an alien.
  • I did the Fertility Friend charting course before trying to get pregnant.  During my pregnancy, I read "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and the Baby Center Essential Guide to Pregnancy and Birth.

  • I thought Great Expectations was the best pregnancy book I read. They use evidence based medicine and not as many crazy scare tactics that I've read in other books.
  • The only books I have read are Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy (which is hilarious) and Consumer Reports Best Baby Products.

I also have On Becoming Babywise which is controversial but I friend recommended it so I figured I would give it a shot.

  • To be honest, I've only read What to Expect, and I only read about a third of it before I rolled my eyes and took it back to the library.

Also, I skimmed "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" because it's required for my childbirth classes. It was helpful, but a little more on the earth mother side than I am able to take seriously.

  • I liked TCOYF and the Your Pregnancy Week by Week one with B.  I also read the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy and Belly Laughs.  They were cute, but not all that informational.

My favorite was a breastfeeding book called So That's What They're For, it was pretty informational, from what I recall.

I haven't read anything this time around.
