fyi:taxes & homebuyer credit

We filed our taxes 30 days ago, and expected our refunds within 14 days. We received our state refund within that time period, but not our federal. We are not relying on that money, but just seemed odd. I called the IRS tonight to check. Since we received the Homebuyers credit in 2008 and this was the first year to repay there is an extra form that has to be filed. (5405) This form was to be mailed in but as she explained to me everyone electronically filled so it is taking longer because refunds have to be manually filed. I asked 3 times to be sure that there was nothing I needed to do, refile or mail anything in and she said no. She said refunds will take about 60 days. I used turbo tax to file, and didn't see anything about a paper file, or actions other than the $500 from our refund. Just wanted to update in case anyone else is experiencing the same thing... or someone call me out that I was blind and missed this addition this year :)

But is it just me or does it not seem odd that the gov't gave us $8000 but now that I am repaying it we are having to take extra steps??

Re: fyi:taxes & homebuyer credit

  • When DH and I filed our taxes in late January, turbo tax announced there were some additional taxes laws that would be taking affect in early February and the IRS would not be accepting any returns until February 16th. He got an announcement around February 25th or so stating our refund has been accepted.

Could that be the hold up as well?

  • We filed the 16th and it was accepted the 18th. I have looked at this form on our return and the irs site, and cannot find anywhere that says you can't e-file. We are not worried about the money, as long as we eventually get it.

  • Crystal, we started paying back this year as well.  Ours was delayed, but we got it a week later.  It was in our account last Friday.  We used H&R block this year because we didn't have time to do it at home.  Hope you get your money soon!
  • And we filed it electronically through them too.  They had to hold it until like February 15th due to some changes on a different form, but I followed my refund on www.irs.gov.  On the right hand side there is a little icon that says something like Where is my Refund?  You have to have your filing status, DH's SS# and your exact amount of your refund to get it.

We received the 2009 credit, which we don't have to pay back. But, I used TaxAct to file our federal return (because it's free and super easy) and it had a prompt asking if we received a credit that we had to pay back and saying we would have to paper file if we did. I wonder why Turbo Tax didn't. That's weird.

Like Liz said, you can check the status of your refund on the IRS website. It was accurate to the day for us. You need to know your filing status, the SSN of the primary filer (in our case, it is mine), and the exact amount of the refund.

  • I did track it on the irs site, and it said we should get the refund on March 7th. When it didn't hit on the 8th I went back to the website and it no longer said a date but that they had received it and it was being processed. Thats why I called this week, since it had been over 21 days like the site said and date was no longer shown.

Odd that Tax Act had that information and Turbo didn't. H and I both looked at our refund last night and no where does it say on the form mail file. I am assuming that the hold up is b/c of this mistake.

  • The tax credit repayment was about 80%of the way through Turbo Tax (I use the full version, not online, don't know if that matters) and quite explicit.  I don't know if it was an update or not, but I downloaded about half a dozen updates when I did my taxes last week.

ETA: I just checked mine and my refund is due 3/22. I filed last Tues or Wed.

  • I used the full version also. Did yours have you e-file with the updates or mention that you had to mail file these forms? I guess I filed before the updates which is causing the hold up.

  • I e-filed. So far so good. (But I just did it a week ago...I never file before march because of this)

I would bet that is what happened. The tax code didn't get updated early enough, which is why those who file anything but the EZ forms had to wait until mid February to file. They may have still been working out the kinks.

I hope it gets straightened out soon. We had trouble getting out $8k credit in 2009 because of mistakes the IRS made. It took about 10 months to finally get it back when all was said and done instead of the predicted 8 weeks.

The same happened to my brother, and then he got audited and they told him he owed the 8k back, b/c the guy that did his taxes didn't include one thing. It has taken him forever to get it straighten out with the irs.

Ugh, that's awful. It's not fun getting the runaround from the IRS.
