Advice for moving to southern RI?

My DH will be starting a new job in Kingston, RI, so we'll be joining you in your great state sometime this summer.  We are really looking forward to the move because the area seems like a great place to live and raise a family (by the time we move we'll have a 2.5 year old and a 2 month old), but we are having trouble narrowing down our options of where exactly to live and whether to buy or rent.  I'd love any information you could provide that would help us make a decision.

Ideally, DH would like to be within bike commuting distance of Kingston (10 miles or less), but we can be flexible about that as long as the drive isn't too long.  We have two young kids, so, at least when we buy a house, we want to make sure we are in a good elementary school district.  We'd also like to be fairly close (walking distance would be ideal) to other amenities like parks/play grounds and other family activities.  I'll be finishing my degree for the next 2-3 years, but after that I'll probably be looking for a job.  Since we don't know where that will be, however, it's hard to include that in our decision making.  We don't care too much about ocean access, but we'd like to be close to hiking trails.

Based on DH's commute Wakefied/Peacedale seem like good options.  Some friends recommended East Greenwich (probably as far as we'd go from Kingston) based on the schools.  Wicksford sounds like an interesting place based on the guidebooks we've been reading.  I'm sure we've overlooked other good options, though.

So, if you have any thoughts you'd like to share about school quality within a 30 minute commute of Kingston, the quality of life in towns in that same area, and/or general suggestions of family friendly activites I'd love to hear them.  We're planning a trip to check out the area at the beginning of April, so I'm gathering ideas now of what we want to include on our grand tour.

On a side note, if you happen to have had a positive experience with a realtor who works in that area, we are also hoping to find someone to work with.  Even if we don't buy a house this summer, we will likely do so within the next year, so please share any recommnedations.  Thanks!

Re: Advice for moving to southern RI?

  • I lived in Northern RI, and am now in central MA, so I don't really have recs for the southern part of the state / Kingston area.

You may want to check the school rankings at http://www.psk12.com/rating/USindexphp/STATE_RI.html for input as to good school systems.

I've had several family members use different realtors associated with Century 21 Crossroads -- http://www.c21crossroads.com/

    WELCOME!

  • I used to live in Wakefield not too far off the South County Bike Path. I really miss it. Kingston is kinda dull (pretty much the only show in Kingston is URI) and I would be very cautious about living in Narragansett (where many URI students live). Wakefield is nice, though. Quiet, pretty, lots of little shops and restaurants, and pretty much has everything you need. I want Brickley's Ice Cream :-) The atmosphere changes in the summer, more so in Narragansett than Wakefield.

I worked with Munroe Realtors on Main Street in Wakefield.

  • I'm in Northern RI, but my bff lives in West Greenwich and I hear the EG school system is one of the best in the state. Sorry I am not more of a help :)

I'll ask my friend who her realtor was. I know she really loved her.

  • Welcome to RI!

I live in Richmond, RI (actually West Kingston, RI) which is pretty close to Kingston.  I can't really speak to the school system since my daughter is only 5 months old but from what I have heard it's a pretty good school system in RI.

The benefits of living in Richmond are:

    - Close access to 95

    - Kind of in the center of everything in RI; 30-35 minutes to Newport, Providence, Mystic, etc

    - Tons of hiking; there is a 14,000 acre management area with tons of hiking, fishing, canoeing, etc (http://www.riparks.com/arcadia.htm)

    - Very reasonably priced housing compared to neighboring areas

    Downfalls of living in Richmond:

    - You are out in the woods (even though I am 10-15 mintue drive from grocery store, home depot, and walmart)

    -  People tend to keep to themselves

Let me know if you have any questions about the area!

  • Sorry I had to post and run, but thank you all for the advice!  I'll check out the school district comparison website, and we'll also look into Richmond.
  • Welcome!  We live in Wakefield/Peacedale and absolutely love it!  Schools are decent and there are options for private school.  East Greenwich is definitely a better district, but they also have higher taxes.  There are lots of great little neighborhoods in Wakefield with lots of shops and restaurants, plus you're very close to the beach.  I would stay away from Narragansett more b/c most house leases are seasonal (9 months durning the school year, and 3 months in the summer)  The URI students don't really help either :(

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Wakefield/Peacedale is a fantastic neighborhood in South Kingstown, and South Kingstown schools are one of the best (if not the best) in the state.

If I could live anywhere in RI, it would be Wakefield.

  • I live in Hopkinton, RI which is part of the Chariho (Charlestown, Richmond, Hopkinton) area of South County.  I love this area.  There are a few of us nesties who live in the area.  Chariho also has a great MOMS Club that I've been part of for 4 years.
  • Thanks again for all the advice!  I am sure I'll be posting more over the next few months, and I will definitely follow-up about local attractions, MOMS clubs, etc.
