Travel - carrying passport
Are you supposed to keep your passport on your person the entire time you travel? I'll be in Mexico soon and wasn't sure if I'm supposed to be carrying around my passport every day. I haven't done international travel in years so I cannot remember.

In general, I'd say yes, carry it in a secure way as Stef described. I think in some cases, depending on where you are/the type of accomodations you have, you can get away with leaving it in a safe in your hotel room (but if you have any doubts, don't do it.)
I also always make color copies of the pertinent pages of my passport and leave one with a trusted friend or family member back home, and carry one with me in a location separate from my actual passport. That way, if it's lost or stolen, you have something to show at the embassy or airport to try and get some help.
Another good tip is to scan a copy of your passports and email it to yourself. Then you'll always have an electronic copy available as long as you have Internet access, should you lose the paper copies for some reason.
I tend to keep my passport on my person when I travel (not even in a bag in most cases, but in a secure pocket on my person--I love zippered pants pockets for this reason) and am uber paranoid about it. But then, we don't usually stay in particularly nice hotels so I prefer not to keep it in the safe. Also, you sometimes have to show your passport to make duty-free purchases, I believe.

I just leave it in the hotel safe unless I know I'll need it that day. I also keep a color copy of the photo page (and any relevant visas) in another bag, tucked away, and email myself a copy of my passport, too.
I always have my passport on me. I'm just not comfortable without it. I almost always have a form of identification with me here, so I feel that if I'm in another country I should carry it with me.
My husband and I carry copies tucked away in our luggage and also email them to ourselves.
