S/O eye color post
Okay dh has been making fun of me for this but I wasn't able to stop thinking about it for the loooongest time.
I have a friend she has super duper blue eyes, like 'wow' blue. This friend has a husband who had green eyes, like pretty cool looking green maybe passible as hazel but I have to admit I would say green. Their 1 year old now has very brown eyes. I found one article supporting that in rare cases a green eyed parent can have a brown eyed child and I stopped looking at that point. Not sure why I am obessing over this, I know it's none of my business but this is a close friend and I just kind of wonder. Did you guys also learn that it wasn't possible and that for biology sake and the gentic chart green=blue (both light)?

Well I showed a clear picture to dh for his opinion and he said he sees zero brown, I thought maybe around the iris because I have yellow brown specs for sure around my iris. If I were honest everytime I look at him I dont' see any brown.
It's all genetics and brown is dominant, so if there is a trace of brown, then yes the kid can have brown eyes.
I can't believe I remember that from freshman bio.

I just remember the chart and it only haf 4 squares and two light eyed parents could not have a dark eyed child.
My friend who is a PA thinks crazier stuff happens and reminded me of a few cases she had to study while still in school.
You really need to look at him in person like right in the eye. It is really hard to tell. When it is dark out my eyes look totally brown, but when light is shining directly in them then they are greenish.
I'm going to look like a nut. I know for sure I would never confuse them with brown but I think if there are specs in there who knows.
LOL You will have to report back as soon as you do. But year your instincts are right. We think that my cousin is the milk man's because both my uncle and aunt have light eyes and she has brown. Sooo weird.
Okay this is similar to the chart I was refering to. Blue would be the small g (as in recessive gene, so two light eyed parents would only carry the recessive 'blue' eyed gene). The last time I did anything in biology was college though.
The punnet square is only as good as what you are putting into it. I'm not positive but there might be some coreccessiveness etc that could be happening. In theory though that would work if it were just a two allele thing.

I thought (hoped) something like that (minus the fancy science talk) I remember learning that green eyes were more or less a combination of blue and brown.

I should have read the link form earlier. LOL it clearly says it is possible I swear I remember being told it wasn't and I know I have notes with the square and eye colors.
I'm a loser and feel bad now.
So I consulted with my Dh about this.
Here's a really good link about eye color
Eye color is much more complicated then our HS biology taught us. The basic concept is still there, but there more than 1 gene that determine eye color. So any combination of eye color would be possible for that couple. Of course there are more such as the brown eyes that would be more probable.
Also there are other genes that act on the intensity of the colors. So he could have Hazel eyes genetically but the color looks more green because there is a gene that tells the brown color to be much less intense than the green color, making them look more green.
