How often do you give your dog(s) a bath?

Just curious Big Smile Growing up, we never really gave our dogs baths because they were pretty much outside all the time. Now, DH and I have 2 dogs that sleep in their crates in the house at night and are inside during the day and I've noticed a lot of dust and dirt everywhere. Maybe I'm not giving them baths often enough? How often do you give your dog(s) a bath?

Also, do you have any awesome shampoo you use?

Any tips on bathing big dogs? Our dogs are about 65-70 lbs each and it's a 2 person job for each one.

Re: How often do you give your dog(s) a bath?

  • Not often. More in the summer than winter, because she'll go to the dog park and get nastied up from the water in the pond, plus she likes to roll in things, it seems.

H gave her a bath the other day and the water was brown Indifferent

No recs for shampoo, sorry. We have one that seems to work fine but I don't know what it is. H got it.

We are lucky that we have a dog that will tolerate being bathed and dried without much fanfare. She doesn't appear to like it, but she's a very easy-going dog (and weighs between 60-65lbs). My sister has found that showering with her big dog makes it easier for the dog. I think the dog thinks my sister must be in misery, too, and misery loves company!

ETA: As for the dust and dirt...I would blame the drought more than the dog!

  • We try to do it atleast once a week. Only because our dog thinks she has to go roll everywhere outside. We also try to take her to the groomers almost every month to get her nails done. The hair between her paws grows really fast and she gets "grinch" feet. I can't think of the name of shampoo we use but we got from our vet.

Our dog is only maybe 30 lbs so no tips from mefor bigger dogs. But we use the shower head that is detachable so it does make rinsing off alot easier instead of a cup. Plus I would just let the water run instead of filling a bath.

  • She's an inside dog, so she gets a bath when she goes to get groomed. Usually once every month or two. Sometimes we give her a bath at home if she needs it, but not often.
  • Once a month grooming for both. (lily gets a bath at the vet or bow wow). I use baby shampoo (Johnson & Johnson) if we need to bathe in between.

  • I bathe my big dog outside when the weather is warm enough.  My little dog usually goes to the groomer every month or two, but I sometimes groom her myself.

When I bathe them I use Head and Shoulders because that's what H uses and I'm not using my expensive shampoo on them.  They're both indoors most of the time and get baths about once a month.

  • Not often enough. Our big dog [he's like, 130 pounds] rolls around all the time and gets a bath probably 1-2 times a month. Our smaller dog [about 50 pounds] is pretty prim and proper, so she doesn't get bathed as often.

My mom gives our big dog something to chew on while she's bathing him - and brings treats to keep him calm, since getting a bath makes him jumpy sometimes. For the most part, he's a pretty good dog when it comes to bathing. She just washes him in sections and uses the toys/treats when he starts to get a little jumpy/impatient.

  • Our Bichon LOVES to play outside and roll in gross things but also loves to snuggle up in bed with us, so he gets a shower pretty often. I'd say he goes to the groomer every 8 weeks (we get a short puppy cut) and a shower at home every 3 weeks. Any more than that and his skin gets dry.

We use a dog shampoo I picked up at Trader Joe's once (no idea what the real brand is) and I actually just put him in the shower when I'm in the shower. It keeps him much calmer and since I was going to get wet from bathing him anyway, it saves me a step. The downside: my furry child is scared for life from seeing me naked Stick out tongue

  • During cooler months, once every 5-8 weeks. During summer, he swims in the pool weekly, so we just brush/trim him regularly and call it good. DH furminates him every 1-2 weeks or so regardless of bathing status.

  • I'd guess we bathe them about once every two months, though it's usually when 1) they start getting too smelly, 2) my hand gets very greasy when I pet them, or 3) someone is coming over to visit.

We use Fresh 'N' Clean oatmeal and baking soda shampoo from Petsmart. It was fairly cheap.

No tips from me. Our dogs are 55-60 lbs each and it takes both of us to bathe them.
