Ugh girls I'm going to need some resume help!

H just showed me an email that was sent out by his bosses. They want a resume and a one page letter explaining why he should be a DM by TUESDAY! Way to give him a little notice. I am only off tomorrow and then Friday we are going away for the weekend. I work on Monday too.

We can't find his old resume. He thinks his sister did it for him but she doesnt have a copy of it. I dont get why they need a resume. He gave them one when he first applied to the company.

I'm getting him to write down all his job info now. They only want the last 10 year of his work history. Within that time frame he only has 1 job from a different company. Do I list each position he has held in Panera separately??  I've got so much crap to do tomorrow but I really need to squeeze this in now as well. Who wants to helps me and critique it when I put it together?

  • totally off topic for a sec - i thought your h worked at einstein bagels! no wonder i couldn't find it in aspen hill! haha. i even drove all around the shopping center after you mentioned there was one there lol. they are building a panera where i live right now. it ahould be open soon. i used to go to the one by my work all the time. anyway, yes it would be a good idea to list his experience with the company as well as duties for each. that would only be to his advantage. btw, where did i get einstein from????
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.

I normally wouldn't care. I want him to get this promotion as much as he wants it. Its just that we are going away this weekend. So I'm annoyed that they didnt give him more notice.

  • Why wouldn't you help your H write a resume, Thor??

BMW - someone posted the other day a really good format for putting in all the jobs and putting internal promotions. I think it was Mrs. U maybe?? It has to be down in a thread from the last month. I'll see if I can find it.

  • I went back to January and can't find it. Maybe she (or the person that she gave the info to) will ping in. Sorry!

  • I agree Mrs U would be the best for advice on this.... But you should list each promotion and on the same line I beleive she wrote to write that it was an internal promotion.

Good luck to your H.  Cover letters are short and sweet.. Brief work history and how he will be a benefit to the company with a new position.

  • You can google resume templates.  I used to hire for Best Buy and a staffing agency so I can definitely look it over.

It's usually a requirement these days with companies to send in an updated resume because that will list all of the past experience as well as what he has done with them and generally they have to interview a few folks by law.

They used to say don't go over one page but these days thats almost impossible but don't go over 2 pages.

Not too sure how long he has worked there but I would just do like the past 10 years of job history or so that way they'll have a scope but put like 3-4 key things he did with each job before and then 5-6 with his current.

  • I'm here, yes, I'm almost positive it was Danielle - her husband had been promoted from within the company in Feb to a supervisor, and she wanted to know how to list that on his resume when he was applying for a new job...

I will help as much as I can...1st I'll try to find that post, we can start from there.....

Oh geez - how do i PM?  I forgot....

but I can help you & hubs out if you want thru a pm..?

PS - i totally get thor's response - "why help him with his resume?" - i felt that way too....but in my job search H looked at my resume & gave me some good tips for improvement Indifferent  2nd, 3rd, etc eyes never hurt.

  • Found it!  Okay, sorry for the large font - it will only let me type this way after cut/pasting...

here we go Stick out tongue   Let me know if you want further help....I would love to.

    Mrs. U, resume help

    -->

Hey lady, I know you're in HR, so I was hoping you could help me out a bit.

This is actually for my husband.  I want to help him improve/update his resume.

First, he's been working as a mall security guard since August 2007, and just here in February he's been promoted to a supervisor.  How should that be shown?  Should it be like a separate job, since it has different responsibilities?

I'm just starting to work on this.  I'm sure I could find answers online, but I'd prefer getting advice from a professional with real input.  I'm sick of him applying and not getting any response.  So all the help the better!

     Hi Danielle,

Sure thing!  There are many different ways to list a promotion, but the more straight forward approach is the best in my opinion.  That way the person reviewing it doesn't get confused or have to read between the lines...if a resume is confusing it's easy to be put to the side.

So, I'd list the company and the total timeframe he's been there, and then list each role as a subline underneath.

    Here is an example:

    _____________________________

XXX Mall, City, Sate August 2007 to Present

    • Security Supervisor (Internal promotion February 2011)

Responsible for ??(list duties & responsibilities of his current supervisory role)

    • Security Officer (August 2007 to February 2011)

Responsible for.......(list past duties & responsibilities as a Security guard)

    ______________________________

I googled it and found this job description online -  http://pagerankstudio.com/Blog/2010/07/security-officer-shopping-centermall-job-description-careers-salary-employment-definition-education-and-training-requirements/

May or may not be in line with your hubby's duties, but it may help some with wording.

Hope that helps...and good luck to hubby!!!

  • You girls are AWESOME!!! Thanks!! I will probably work on it later this afternoon/evening. I have lots of errands to run today for our up coming trip. I also just realized that I dont have a word on this lap top. So I'm going to have to use our old desk top upstairs that doesnt have internet access. Sad So it might take me a little while to get it to you girls.

  • Im not fantastic at resume writing, but Id just like to say, despite the stress, its great theyre moving on this so fast!! Good Luck to him

[and I totally get Thor's comment above- however- if I let my H do his own, he'd never get a job LOLz. His writing/orginizational skills are lacking]

.*. We come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by finding an imperfect person perfectly .*.
  • I am not saying I wouldn't review it but I sure as crap wouldn't be writing it up and templating it. F that. He is a grown man and needs to know how to do this himself.
