Resume Organization - directy related periodic volunteer experience & other Qs

For my H.

Other Q first:

Director type position that includes certifications in requirements. Typically you'd put certifications after experience but I'm wondering if in this scenario it would make sense to put these immediately after the objective/profile/personal statement (what is this being called these days, that's another question) where in his case he's presumably grabbed their attention with snippets along the lines of "...with 10 years management experience in xyz environment...", things they list in the job description and things for which more detail is provided in the experience section. Thoughts?

Main question:

He has only had one employer throughout his career and the position he is applying for is internal. He also has a significant amount of volunteer experience that is 110% directly related to the position however it has been periodic and with different entities. Would you do strictly a timeline based experience section and mix the volunteer experience with the paid experience even though his company will be listed over and over for each position he has held with them? Or would you do separate experience and volunteer sections? Or something else.

The job description places equal emphasis on certifications, management experience, and industry knowledge.

ETA: His volunteer experience is similar to his actual experience in that he held multiple positions within two organizations and these positions were key in his attainment of knowledge and management experience.

Re: Resume Organization - directy related periodic volunteer experience & other Qs

  • Objectives are out. A lot of people do an experience summary.

I think it would be fine to roll the cedrtifications in with the job duties/accomplishments instead of having a separate section.

I would do separate experience and volunteer sections. Something along the lines of:

    Employment History

    Company Name                Location

    Most recent job title           Dates

    Bulleted job duties/accomplishments

Next most recent job title    Dates

    Bulleted job duties accomplishments

    Other Relevant Experience

    XYZ Organization      Location

    Volunteer Position     Dates

    Bulleted duties/accomplishments

    Volunteer Position     Dates

    Bulleted duties/accomplishments
