Interesting story (re: radiation from Japan)

I went to the Vitamin Shoppe this morning to pick up my kid's multivitamins.  Anyway a woman came in while I was checking out, asking if they had iodine (which is used to proactively treat radiation exposure).  The employee said she was at least the 8th person to ask that morning, and that they were sold out.  The employee said something about how places are selling out because we are 'going to get slammed' in the next few days.  I was really surprised.  I had heard about the radiation reaching CA, but I guess I didn't really think about it here.

Just thought it was an interesting story.  I haven't been keeping up on all the details of the nuclear reactor, so I read a few articles about it and learned also comparing how much radiation we are generally exposed to (daily, xrays, etc) and past nuclear accidents.  This whole situation is so sad and a reality check - the reactor was supposed to be shut down this year because it was 40 years old.

Re: Interesting story (re: radiation from Japan)

  • I haven't heard about the east coast being exposed to anything other than normal levels. Sometimes I think people hear things and run with it, though I may be too trusting of our scientists and news people.
  • Umm.. since my similar post on Green Living got C&P'd..

I'm not freaking out, just sharing a story and that I decided to follow up with some reading material..

So to clarify, in case anyone thinks I am panicking and waiting for major nuclear fallout.. I'm not!

  • We dropped the atom bomb on Japan and weren't exposed here in NY.  I'm sure that's worse exposure than these nuclear power plants.  Besides if people are paranoid, just have a little salt, there's plenty of iodine in that to lower radiation levels.  People are certainly paranoid by the sounds of it.
  • People are definitely overreacting and I"m sure the media isn't really helping matters.

Here is an interesting article about US nuclear plants...it's very surprising to me.
