"How anti-abortion laws hurt all women"

http://www.advocatesforpregnantwomen.org/

On the homepage, there is an excellent -- and terrifying -- video that gives insight into how "fetus rights" laws have severely hurt pregnant women in difficult situations.  It is about five minutes long, but worth watching.  It details several stories where hospitals/law enforcement put fetus rights ahead of the rights of the women, trying to force them to have C-sections.  One woman was arrested in her home where she was in active labor, and taken to the hospital.  Another was charged with murder when one of her twins was stillborn.   Another hospital got a court order taking control of the fetus "before, during, and after birth".  It's just stunning that this kind of thing is happening to women in this day and age.  A few of these stories were posted on the old E08, but I thought it was worth sharing this again.

This isn't in any way supporting abortions, but instead, it's showing how these "anti-abortion" laws are being extrapolated to take personal medical decisions away from women and their doctors regarding actual births and wanted children.

I'm not posting this to argue pro-choice vs. pro-life, but to discuss how these "fetus protection" laws are being misused.

  • Preaching to the choir - at least on my end. Politicians should have no part in determining someone's health care.

  • Although I'm a Repub, abortion is my extreme left-wing issue.  I cannot wrap my head around the concept that some otherwise uninvolved and uninformed third party who has never met a woman has the right to dictate the medical decisions she makes.

Oh wait, that's the essence of health insurance, isn't it... Stick out tongue

  • That is HORRIBLE. ?The woman who died freaks me out most of all. ??

  • I read about a few of those cases in the book Pushed, by Jennifer Block and was horrified. I really wish that anti-choice people would consider the points brought up in the video.

These "personhood" laws are becoming more and more relevant to pregnant women as healthcare providers are increasingly relying on drugs and surgical interventions for a number of reasons (including financial, legal... sometimes nothing to do with health). The moms and babies are left with the aftermath of needless pain, surgery, costs, etc. It's hard enough as it is to make childbirth choices in the US.?

  • Wow. That is a very powerful video.
