OK, I'm going to go there....
At risk of offending Christians and sounding really ignorant but I'm genuinely curious....
Maybe it's so fresh in my mind because Dan and I went to comedy show last night but one of the comics made a joke about Easter/Jesus/the Cross/Ressurection/Judgement Day/etc.
It was something along the
lines of "Why do people wear a Cross with Jesus nailed to it? If Jesus
were to see that, don't you think he would be offended?" Now my
delivery is definitely not as good as the comedien's... and this is only
the jist of the joke... But seriously, how is that not offensive to
Christians?
Mind you, I really don't know much outside of what I have learned from friends, family, etc.

From what I know, not sure about Catholic, but some of the Protestant Christians I've known wear a cross because it is a reminder of the sacrifice Christ made.
Other Christians don't because while he did die, him resurrecting from the dead is what made him our savior. Not dying on the cross.
I've seen it both ways.

I thought and heard this, too. I also heard what SMo mentioned also.
To me, it just seems like a grim reminder but I understand what it represents.

Christ's death was part of the big plan. God knew that his son would have to die on a cross in order to free mankind from their sins. The cross, to me, is a symbol of that sacrifice and all of the good things that have come from it. I'm not offended by Christ's death.
Yep, I agree. You can't resurrect if you haven't died. Sacrifice and salvation. Hand in hand.

I think this is sort of off-topic on Nat's original question but....some Christians don't like crosses with Christ still on them (my mother is one of these people). Her logic is that, He's not on the cross anymore, so why wear or display something that shows that? He's alive, not dead.
Of course I understand the other side of the coin too....just throwing out another perspective!

Actually, I think you bring up a good point. Although your mother's reason is different than my line of thinking... but I feel like portraying Jesus nailed to a cross is a bit sad. Like I said before, I don't practice a particular religion, so maybe that's why I feel that way... but again, I completely understand the significance to Christians.
I like to look at things, for the most part, in a positive light.... and I don't think anyone being portrayed as tortured is a positive thing. Personally, I feel like wearing a plain cross would be just as good reminder of the sacrifices Jesus made rather than one with him on it.

I agree with this. My stepdad is Catholic, and he and my mother regularly go to Catholic church. Their church's alterpiece is Jesus nailed to the cross. It's always made me a little uncomfortable, just because I think the cross itself is a representation of Jesus's sacrifice. The tortured body and crown of throwns isn't really necessary, in my option. This is something you'd rarely see in a Baptist church.
I think this is it exactly. It seems like the more evangelical churches are far less likely to have images of Christ still on the cross...even though of course they acknowledge his torture and death. I guess they just don't focus on that, but more on the resurrection aspect.

The cross is a sign of sacrifice, yes - but the cross stood empy after Christ rose from the dead. It's also a sign of triumph over death, of resurrection and of forgiveness of sins. I think the cross is also a reminder of why people needed Jesus. I can't beleive that God wants people to be offended by the cross - but rather for people to be reminded as to why we need it.
PS - I don't want to turn into that crazy Bible pounding lunatic around here.... I've never thrown my religion at anyone. This post is just in close conjunction to my other post. Sorry if it sounds that way.
ETA: Jesus wasn't crucified as a punishment - he did it out of love. So - I guess to answer the original question, I don't think He'd be offended by the fact that people use symbols of that act of love in worship.
I can only speak from a Catholic perspective?though I believe Orthodox and certain Anglican groups share similar beliefs.
In scripture, we proclaim Christ crucified and proclaim His death. At Mass every Sunday, Catholics believe they are present at the last Supper, and at the crucifixion, outside of time. At communion, Catholics believe the bread and wine are not merely symbols but that they become the body and blood of Christ. Having the Corpus on the cross isn't focusing on the negative in our eyes. The crucifixion, while a horrible thing in itself, is the greatest sign of love that anyone could possibly imagine. It doesn't deny the resurrection, but is a more real symbol and sign of God taking on our sinfulness.
There could be no Resurrection without first the crucifix, the death of our Lord. Christ crucified on the cross is the ultimate expression of the highest form of love a total self-gift. So, to us, it is not necessarily a negative reminder as it is a visual representation of the sacrifice of love ? the greatest thing in the world. Without the Corpus on the Cross, it's easier to not think about the full gravity of Christ's sacrifice. The world is full of incredible suffering, things that could send us into despair. We?ve seen some in Japan this week. The crucifix reminds us that God receives that suffering, and that he has even shared it.
