moms-wwyd?

So Liza has had a cold for 13 days. I took her in to the doctor last friday just to be sure that it was a cold and nothing else.

Well, she is not getting better at all. I can hear the congestion in her chest and hate hearing her cough.

I called to talk to the nurse, but she wasn't any help. She said they would see Liza if I was concerned or thought she was worse, but if I thought she was the same or better then she probably doesn't need to be seen.

I'm so torn. She was her 9mo appointment on Monday so I hate to bring her in for no reason again. I just get so worried that she has something else, you know?

Her temperature hasn't gone above 99.5 (but maybe i never gave it a chance since I will give her tylenol when I notice she is warm-she usually gets fussy) so I'd guess there isn't an infection.

I guess I am just looking for some reassurance that I'm not a nutjob for being worried, but that it is okay that I don't take her in today.

  • I think it's okay that you don't take her in.  But, don't give her any Tylenol for a while.  If there is a fever, give it a chance to spike so you know for a fact that there is one.  Colds and coughs can last a long time in little ones.  Unless she's showing signs of troubled breathing (wheezing, turning blue, or sucking her stomach in when she breathes) then I wouldn't worry too much.  Do keep an eye on her temp though.

  • Usually with Dom, when I can hear the congestion in his chest when he breathes, (kinda sounds like darth vader ... but not so dramatic) and I have taken him in to the pedi they just tell you to do the typical things, and have given us an inhaler to use to help open up his airway, and make him cough that stuff up.  The things that I have done for him when he's congested are:

    Warm Mist Humidifier

Vicks baby rub on his chest before bed

    Johnsons vapor bath

elevate the head of his mattress so that its at a slight incline

and definitely keep on top of suctioning out his boogies.  If she is running a temp, let it spike so you know for sure like Pam said, and then I might take her in to be seen, because with congestion, can come ear infections...

good luck. Its no fun when little ones are sick.  She should be on the upswing of this cold by 13-14 days, so if she's not any better tomorrow, I probably would take her in.

  • Thanks girls. i feel better. I can totally hear it in her chest. The thing that makes me concerned it that i don't get much of anything when i suction her nose (even with saline drops). I think I have some of the Baby Vicks so I may try that. I will let the fever spike if she feels warm, that is a good idea. I'm usually so concerned with helping her feel better that I didn't think to let it spike.

Watch, I'll bring her in tomorrow (I have a feeling she won't be any better) and she will be feeling better while there and start acting sick as soon as we leave-ALWAYS happens :)

    This.

  • I am no help. If you are concerned bring her in. We brought Allie in once 3 times in one week and on the 3rd time she was given meds because she had an infection. Then a few weeks after, her cough was bad so we brought her in and they gave us stff. Then it wasn't any better after a week or so later so we brought her back in again and it was indeed worst.

I say bring her in. If I am worried I take her in. I will relax next winter when she is older but for now I bring her in! I am crazy though!!

  • I agree, babies should not get sick  :(  If she is eating and drinking (mainly drinking) normally and is still interested in playing I would not worry.  If she is not and is just kind of blah, bring her in.  You are at more risk exposing her to whatever the other sick kids in the office have.  And definitely let a fever spike - it is really the best thing so that you can see what it is.  And fevers do the body good, really.  We run them HIGH in our family - 103-105 so we are very familiar with them!!
  • It's good to let the fever run its course.  It's the body's own way of fighting off whatever infection is going on.  Off course, bring her in to the docs if it's spiking too high.  As to the chest congestion.  My son just spent the last month with 2 consecutive colds.  Make sure she gets plenty of liquid and bring her into the bathroom for some good warm steam (I usu. sit in there and read a book or play with him while the other takes a shower).  The other thing that really helps, but might come off sounding kinda strange is to lay her across your lap facing down and pat her on the back (like as if to burp her).  Do that whenever you hear that congestion in her chest for 3-5min at a time or as long as she'll stay put.  That will help break up the congestion in her chest for her to have a more productive cough.
  • My pedi tells me to come in if the symptoms have lasted longer than 10 days. Last time M had a cold/cough/chest congestion I was going to let it run it's course because she wasn't getting worse, but not any better either.  I ended up bringing her in just in case and she had an ear infection (no fever, no telltale signs, etc)  So, if it were me, I would bring her in just to get the ears checked out, just in case.

That's what I am worried about. She is happier today, but still all congested. I'll see how the night goes and probably call again tomorrow.

    Thanks everyone!` ``````````
