OK, long story to follow.
My former boss was promoted a few months ago to Tax Director of a different company. This opens up a Tax Manager spot at my company and I am encouraged to interview for the position. It would be a promotion for me and would bring new responsibilities and new challenges. Would also require us to move to the Boston area (and be neighbors with the wonderful cdobbs!) I interviewed for that last month and was offered the position, but at a salary that I felt was way too low given the extremely high cost of living out there (compared to Indiana, at least.) I let him know I am not happy with the offer, he basically blows off my concerns and said it would be taken care of in the cost of living adjustments in the relocation package. It wasn't, so I turned down the job. He is shocked and tells me he is going to "see if there is any wiggle room" in relation to the salary. I was not hopeful for this as I was previously told this was as high as they would go.
Second Tax Manager job opens up at another affiliated company in FL so I apply for that as the cost of living there is low and I figure I can live very nicely on what I was offered for the other Tax Manager job, assuming that it would be the same or similar amount. I am immediately given a very positive response. Basically told that they want me to come down ASAP to check it out.
Current Boss comes back to me and indicates that he now agrees with me that what they had offered me was too low and are going to come to a higher number. Still not quite at what I had wanted, but we would be comfortable out there on that. I tell him I need to think about it and that I wanted to see this FL thing through now that I had applied for it. He is not happy but agrees.
I go down for the interview this week. We freaking LOVE Jacksonville and could really see ourselves living there. This job would get us within a few hours of a grandparent (Josh's mom lives in FL) and would get us away from midwest winters, which we hate. Job would be similar, but probably less developmental opportunities in the long run as it isn't quite as complex as current company. However, as a new Mom who wants to spend more time with the fam, I am not looking to promote to Tax Director any time soon and I could see myself being able to make a big difference there. I just got a phone call with their offer-- its the same amount as the second, higher offer I got for the Boston area job.
So now I have to chose. If we go to FL I will be kind of screwing over my current team as we are already short handed, but our Corporate Tax Leadership is telling me not to worry about that. There are probably some issues wiht the new job as the girl who is currently in that position is quitting (without anything lined up) but basically everybody I talked to about her this week said that she is too nice and doesn't ever say NO to anybody so she gets walked all over and is pretty burned out. I feel like either job will be a challenge for me. Really the only thing holding me back is feeling like I am going to negatively impact the people I work with now. What do you guys think? Be selfish and go for FL or be a good member of my current team and stick with them and move to MA?
Sorry for the novel, but I am seriously confused and I need help figuring this out. Oh, and I probably need to figure out by tomorrow so I can give my boss an answer when I get in the office.
Re: Job advice needed!
Would you have anyone near you in MA? Any family or friends?
How does your H feel? Is there a better option for him in terms of a career?
First, congrats on the offer!
Okay, so it's my opinion that while loyalty to your team is an admirable trait, it can't be the reason you make a huge life decision. You have to do what's best for you and your family. Maybe I'm a bit jaded because of how I've been screwed over by employers, but corporate life is cutthroat, and generally when the tables are reversed, your feelings wouldn't be considered as it's "just business."
I say go to FL.

1) You said that you both love Jacksonville. 2) I have a hard time believing Northeast winters are any better than those in the Midwest. Sounds like Jacksonville is the better overall choice for your family. Your team will have to understand that even if they are disappointed to lose you.
Thanks Mames!
I agree with you on the whole "just business" thing. Thats a really good perspective to take on it. I knew you guys would have good advice/make me think of things in a different way!
Then I would be headed to FL. Sorry Casey!
KB, you are right about the winters. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the Northeast winters are worse, what with getting Noreasters and all!
The bolded part really stood out to me. When you talked about Boston, you weren't nearly as enthusiastic. Plus they are offering you the same money, but for a lower COL area.
I love Boston, but if escaping winter is important to you...New England isn't the place to do so. One thing to keep in mind about Florida, the summers are hot & humid.
Congrats on all the opportunities!

Congrats on both offers!
Now move to Florida. It seems pretty clear from all your posts that it's what you really want in your heart.
I HAVE to weigh in on this!
OK, not to toot my own horn, but living near me would be AWESOME.
I'm just kidding. Massachusetts is awesome, I love living here and honestly could never go anywhere else - but if you are looking to avoid harsh winters, then don't come here. There's a lot of great things about MA, especially the region we'd be in (excellent schools, proximity to several bigger cities and major highways, every store imaginable within 20 minutes of you, beach less than an hour away, mountains an hour away, etc.) But there's the high COL & the harsh winters - those are the only big "downers" I can think of.
HOWEVER-- you said you LOVED Jacksonville. Your husband LOVED Jacksonville. There's no WINTERS in Jacksonville! C'mon silly, get your little trio down to FL stat! It sounds like that is where your heart is.
Don't worry about the business aspect - you have to put you and your newly expanded family first. Go for the FL job, start packing! This seems like a no-brainer.
In the meantime, if you need anything at all, never hesitate to shoot me an email

This exactly. Sounds like FL is where you want to be. Congratulations and GL with the move. How exciting!
I agree 100% with this. My boss even told me that you can only have as much loyalty to your company as it has shown to you.
I wouldn't worry about the experience of the woman who is leaving. Work is going to be work wherever it is, so if you're working hard and barely scraping by in a HCOL, I wouldn't care if I liked what I did from 9-5--I wouldn't enjoy myself.
This exactly! Congrats!
